Hmmmm ...
by Nicholas Beaudrot of Electoral Math
Maybe Atrios is right about Bob Kerrey (D-last elected to represent NE). Here he is challenging Presidential candidates to go on Don Imus' new show. As I read it, the most valuable things about Don Imus are ... the fact that his audience is large an influential. This is silly; Rush Limbaugh has a large and influential audience, but on the merits there's no reason to engage Limbaugh's rantings on ... well, anything, except maybe the broad level that there are lots of working-class white men who feel disenfranchised. Likewise, if the Imus' best attribute is that his audience consists of voters who are occasionally receptive to Democrats but otherwise hard for candidates to reach, then that's a rather small-minded reason to patronize his programming.
The charitable interpretation is that Kerrey wrote this to set up his own appearance on the new Imus show, proving his courage and independence to Nebraskans. As long as he doesn't make pollyannish statements about Iraq, suggest a brain-dead "compromise" plan to privatize Social Security, or tell Imus how awful it was to have a lynch mob started over a few words, it seems harmless enough. But watch out.

It's pretty bad when the charitable interpretation is that you're just peddling self-serving B.S.

It may or may not be influential, but his audience is not large. Certainly not even remotely in the ballpark of Limbaugh.

Actually, there's 2 good reasons to go on hostile media outlets: (1) you'd be surprised how many people who listen or watch such outlets actually are open to voting for Democrats, and may not hear your message any other way; and (2) taking a bunch of tough questions from a skeptical or even hostile host makes a politician look like he or she is bipartisan and is not afraid of tough questions.

You seem to be implying that Imus's "rantings" are similar to Limbaugh's shtick, but nothing could be further from truth. In addition to the occasionally offensive eighth grade humor, Imus's show has been characterized by plenty of high-brow discussion of politics, history, economics and culture. And it's definitely not from a rightist point of view (though not necessarily from a leftist point of view either); regular guests have included the aforementioned Kerrey, plus such right wing kooks as John Kerry (endorsed in '04 by Mr. Imus), Chris Dodd, Paul Begala, Doris Kerns Goodwin, and James Carville. Plus, Imus loathes the Clintons -- surely that should get him some points with progressives.

"Plus, Imus loathes the Clintons -- surely that should get him some points with progressives."
I know a lot of racists who loathe Clinton, too, just don't expect me to listen to them for much of anything, especially political advice! Imus should have been left to spend his large, ill-gotten stash on his charities, he might have proven his worth by devoting the last years of his life to good deeds behind the scenes rather than the microphone. Polluting the airwaves that I pay for with my tax dollars with his juvenalia is bad enough, the racism just makes it all the worse.
