De-fund the Office of the Vice President. De-fund it now.

by Nicholas Beaudrot of Electoral Math

I was going to reach another plane shrillness after Dick Cheney's lawyers cooked up an idea that wouldn't pass muster in a bull session among pre-law College Republicans, but I see that Rahm Emanuel has beaten me to it.

Cheney's office is technically correct; the Constitution does not grant any executive power to the Vice President. Any executive power he gets is by virtue of delegation from the President. So, there's nothing wrong with having Congress zero out all appropriations for the Vice President's office. It's really the only way to deal with such a brazen attempt to avoid accountability.

De-fund the Office of the Vice President. De-fund it now.

I don't always agree with Emanuel, but when he's good, he's very good.

Yeah, give him a straightforward play and he'll pull it off right.

Defund ALL the staff in the Office of VP, and forbid money transfers or personnel assignments from any other department or agency (including the Exec. Office of the President).

Do it now.

Then start impeachment hearings on Cheney for failure to preserve and protect the Constitution and Laws of the US.

Amend Senate Rule I so that the Veep can't delegate the authority to preside over the chamber.

I want that fucker sitting in plain view on C-SPAN where we can make sure he's not up to mischief.

Interestingly enough, I first heard this idea from a caller on the Randi Rhodes show Friday. Either Rahm listens to Air America, or one of his people were running up a test flag. (No, I have no faith that Rahm had an original thought -- but stranger things have happened.)

Okay, that's pretty funny. Sadly, amending Senate Rules requires a 2/3s majority. So this is all sort of a fantasy anyway.

Well, first there would have to be a clause, "except when prevented from fulfilling his duties by ill health" ... and second, I prefer the defund option. A little practice with the power of the purse, and the House Majority might finally start to remember what the power of the purse feels like.

It's LONG past time the Legislature started taking measures to smack the executive into line. The Republicans won't let them do it, of course, but the thought gives me warm fuzzies.

THIS is a true Constitutional crisis. Impeachment is not. It is a remedy provided by the Constitution. When the vice president and NOW the president declare themselves outside of the rules and laws governing the executive branch, then we effectively have no executive.
Either impeach them for trying to set up different system of government (treason) or accept their premise as their resignations. Then idict.

It is time, passed time, to get rid of these unAmerican insurgents, and bring back the democracy that they have tried to destroy.
