The Latest From Iowa

By Neil the Ethical Werewolf

New Iowa primary poll from the Des Moines Register.  On the Democratic side, we've got Edwards at 29, Obama at 23, and Hillary at 21.  The Republicans are led by Romney at 30, with McCain at 18 and Giuliani at 17.  (When asked about candidates they'd like to see in the race, 48% of Republicans mention Gingrich while 45% mention Fred Thompson.  50% mention Condi Rice, who is about as likely to run in 2008 as Ronald Reagan.)

As an Edwards supporter, I think it's better to see Obama in the #2 spot than to see Hillary there.  Matt Yglesias describes the dynamic that keeps labor -- and perhaps other Democratic groups -- from declaring against her:

As best I can tell, most labor people would prefer that she not be the nominee, but they're not going to do much of anything about it. They think, after all, that if she wins she'll need to be at least somewhat attentive to their concerns, but that if they tilt against her and she wins anyway, then they'll really be fucked.

Two points in a poll are a small thing (that's within the margin of error, anyway).  But in general, the more that happens to knock her off the front-runner's pedestal, the better.  I was quite happy when Obama surpassed her in Q1 primary fundraising, because the more that happens to remove the aura of inevitability from Hillary, the more likely Democratic groups are to make up their own minds and endorse the candidates they actually prefer, without fear.

How well are the three organized in Iowa? I understand that in the caucuses organization matters even more than usual.

I doubt much of Clinton's support is due to a sense of inevitability. Most Democrats (netroots notwithstanding) just like her and see her as strong, qualified, a woman, etc.

Hillary's candidacy reflects the depressing position progressives are in. She voted for the Iraq War, has a union-busting specialist on her team, and is pro-trade free (business friendly). Yet, we can't stand-up to her in order to not experience her wrath if she is elected! America is fucked!

I think you're confusing unions and progressives, jncam.

Posted by: Sanpete | May 20, 2007 7:32:55 PM

Well, unions are part of the progressive movement broadly speaking.

I hear (from people sympathetic to Edwards, so take it for what it's worth) that Edwards' old 2004 organization is largely intact in Iowa and that it's been growing over the intervening years, while Clinton and Obama are more or less starting from scratch.

Sanpete, on average the goals of unions (such as those representing janitors) and progressives are the same. However, there are a subset of unions that are the opposite of progressive (for example, police unions).

I think union leaders are going to need more than a few polls to be comfortable choosing someone other than the Establishment favorite, post-Dean. I bet they never get off the fence.

Neil the Ethical Werewolf, Thanks for the Edwards insight! That is good news. John Edwards in 08!

Did anyone see the NY TImes article about HRC's role with Walmart?

Posted by: akaison | May 20, 2007 9:12:31 PM

Yes, Neil, more news from you about how wonderful Edwards is... :)

I think it's still way too soon to take a lot of this polling too seriously. There's plenty of times for the ground to shift, and I expect it will, on both sides, but especially for the GOP. I also don't like to overvalue either Iowa or New Hampshire - especially this year when money and juggernaut approaches to the Moster Tuesday will probably matter more.

So... with that out of the way... anyone else freaked about the prospect of Bloomberg/Hagel running independent?

Posted by: weboy | May 20, 2007 10:06:13 PM

No because politics is a team sport. They may call it a race, but it ain't track.

Anyone spending a billion dollars on a campaign has a damn good shot at winning it.

It didn't bother me, but I'm sure it will bother those looking for more reasons to hate Hillary. I thought that it was written rather misleadingly, that if read carefully it made her look just fine.

When asked about candidates they'd like to see in the race... 50% mention Condi Rice

*snicker*

But will those 50% vote for condi rice?

If this is true...

They think, after all, that if she wins she'll need to be at least somewhat attentive to their concerns, but that if they tilt against her and she wins anyway, then they'll really be fucked.

Then, not only has labor turned into a bunch of weak-kneed, piss-ants, but they deserve the milquetoast support that a Clinton Presidency would give them.

If you have them much you will become strong and you can also go to kill the monsters more easily.
