Who's "You?"

Eve Fairbanks had a relatively odd op-ed in The LA Times this weekend arguing that though Nancy Pelosi has thus far governed from the center, the ruse could be up at any moment, as "her liberal heart still beat[s] for unconditional amnesty for illegal immigrants and legalized gay marriage." Ho-kay. Seems to me that Eve absorbed the critique of the "mainstream" Minutemen a little too fully.

Moving on, the part I was actually confused about came at the end, when Eve concluded:

Did Bush, who has been so petulant about the alterations made to his supplemental 2007 and fiscal year 2008 budget requests, really think he could send a budget to a Democratic-controlled Congress and get it sent back to him without any tweaks? Democrats will be Democrats, and Pelosi is a Democrat. The best you can hope for is that she'll behave a little more gently along the way.

Who's the "you" in that sentence? who thinks a gentle, centrist Democrat Party is the best-world outcome? Surely not progressives. And surely not the 70% of Americans who want the Iraq War ended. Or the overwhelming majorities who favor a signed minimum wage increase, or universal health care. Or the pluralities who routinely say Congress should have the final word on troop levels in Iraq. So who's Eve talking about?

So Fairbanks's is a Republican. Disappointing, but--short of wishing for some sort of disclosure--what are you going to do?

She's thinking about an alternate (Stephen-Glassian?) universe where she gets to make up what the world is like and port it into our universe whether it fits or not.

At least it's in an OpEd instead of an ostentible "news" story this time.

"you" = "one" = particularly anyone who might have had dreams of getting a clean bill

In my experience, when people say "you" in a generalized way, they specifically mean "I".

You = Bush, and Republicans / New-York-Post-"Miss-Syria" types who whine about Pelosi's extremism. The op-ed was mainly directed at this camp, as I tried to make clear in its lede, not at progressives, who were rightly unflapped by her Syria trip. It could have been written more clearly, that's for sure. But I'm not a Republican, nor interested in "porting" my universe into yours.
