Things I DIdn't Know

Alanis Morrissette and Ryan Reynolds dated? Really?

Weird.

I love Reynolds, incidentally, and maintain that the original Van Wilder is criminally underrated.

I saw Reynolds in a bar in Santa Monica, and he's gotta be the only tall celebrity I have ever seen. Otherwise they're all unsettlingly short.

"... and maintain that the original Van Wilder is criminally underrated."

???

What do you mean by "original Van Wilder"? Is there a re-make?

Hannibal King single-handedly saved "Blade: Trinity"

Whether this is a good thing or a mark of shame is up for contention.

<3 Ryan Reynolds.

As opposed to the Rise of Taj.

UberMitch:

Tim Robbins
Vince Vaughn
Tom Hanks
Gene Hackman
Chris Noth

to name a few

Collin:

True, but I haven't seen them in real life. My comment did not make clear that it was limited to my in-person experiences.

Posted by: UberMitch | Apr 10, 2007 2:24:46 PM

Uber:

well, okay then. I'm a tall guy myself and I always find it a bit disconcerting when I meet people significantly taller than me, because I'm usually the tallest -- or close to the tallest -- in the room. So when I met Chris Noth at a New Year's party a few years back, it was really, really weird, 'cause he's huge.

I must protest the call for criminal prosecution of my colleagues who criticized Van Wilder. The fact remains that ordinary movie reviewing -- snarking, sniping, lying, cheating, exaggerating and other forms of PG entertainment -- has been so thoroughly criminalized that only a fool would comment deprecatingly on Van Wilder without attempting to bargain for immunity by first invoking the Fifth Amendment.

Collin:

I know exactly what you mean, being 6'5" myself. I remember back when I was at the Univ. of Maryland and occasionally the basketball players would show up at a party I was at. It just seems unnatural to tilt my head back to look at another human being. But, I suppose that how everyone else sees us.

Posted by: UberMitch | Apr 10, 2007 3:13:09 PM

Ever since Van Wilder, Ryan Reynolds will only be known to me and my friends as Van Wilder. He has no other name.

Posted by: Adrock | Apr 10, 2007 4:36:27 PM

Him and Dane Cook should be melted down and merged together to form a single mediocre actor/comedian. They kinda look alike, and it would save us all some confusion.

Van Wilder was horrible, even worse than 2 guys a girl and the shittiest show of the last ten years.

Isn't he the guy she wrote "You Oughta Know" for? I know it was a comedian she was dating at the time. I forget the name.

Whatever you do, though, don't rent the sequel.

Mate, it has been a while - but i have to chime in and fully concur with your assessment of this film. i first caught it at Uni as part of an all-night marathon which i had survived by drinking vodka and redbull constantly. this failed to keep me awake through the tripe that was on display - however, Van Wilder distinctly awakened me for the home stretch.

Write that down.

Rumor has it that it's about Dave Coulier of Full House, her ex-boyf and fellow Canadian.

My problem with "Van Wilder" is that in the ideal dumb teen/college comedy, you're supposed to root for the insecure and likable underdog to rise to the top, against the depredations of the attractive, popular, and privileged. In "Van Wilder," I was thrown off by being asked to root for a confident, popular and privileged (albeit likable) character to maintain his status.

(In that way, it's sort of a mirror of "Napoleon Dynamite," in which the main character, while an underdog to more popular and privileged kids, is not, in fact, particularly charming; he's abrasive. Also, he's not particularly insecure; he's weirdly confident.)

not just dated, but considered getting married. i know you people are political geeks, but this is crazy you didn't know they dated.
