An Early End?

Yeah, I too have trouble seeing how Tommy Thompson recovers. It's not that I think his comments towards Jews had even an ounce of malice to them -- I don't. But the Republicans aren't going to unite behind a long-shot candidate who's already proven himself politically undisciplined. And Thompson's excuse -- fatigue and a cold had worn him out, and so he slipped -- is all the more damning. The guy announced mere weeks ago. If the rigors of the campaign are already overwhelming his judgment, it's hard to imagine him a safe bet over the dozens of months to come. All this, of course, is depressing for us liberals, as I was hoping Tommy Thompson's involvement would confuse enough Fred Thompson voters to render Fred harmless.

For a day after this story hit, I thought it was Fred Thompson who made the remark about Jews.

I was disappointed to learn that it was just Tommy Thompson.

Recovers? Doesn't this imply TT was actually going somewhere before?

Fred is a joke. In the general election he'll be able to distinguish himself from Bush on exactly zero issues.

Absolutely, but the question is whether (or more precisely, how much) this will matter.

Also, none of the GOP candidates will really distinguish themselves from Bush on anything, with the exception of Giuliani on abortion. But it's a mistake to think the Democrats have this one in the bag. Not by a long shot.

Fred is the generic Republican. And I expect a distressing amount to be made of the Republican Actor = Reagan reincarnated angle.

So Ezra assumes that making mildly antisemitic remarks is a negative in Republican primaries? I wish I was that optimistic. More likely it'll have no effect whatsoever and the reason Thompson won't win the nomination is he just isn't batshit insane enough for the primary electorate.

"Depressing for us liberals"? Pity, rather, the people of Wisconsin. We had to put up with this knucklehead for 8 years. I'm still not sure how his campaign announcement caused a minor stir in Milwaukee, though I admittedly don't know all that much about wingnut psychology.

You know who likes Fred Thompson? House Republicans. You know who doesn't like House Republicans? About 56% of the people who voted in '06.

Fred Thompson is a pair of jowls attached to a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece. I hope to Christ the Republicans do nominate him, with Newt Gingrich for VP.

Tommy Thompson is comically stupid.

As a native of Wisconsin, I'm continuously surprised to see that Thompson is still able to walk around on his hind legs. His national-government legacy includes a laughably bad stint as Bush's HHS Secretary: each time he was in front of a camera he'd sputter and misspeak until someone gently led him away. He vanished quietly from the administration.

He's gone.

While Thompson's remarks were no doubt without malice as part of their intent, the "I was just tired and worn out" excuse doesn't matter a whit and kinda actually makes thinks worse. "Gee, fellas, I was just so tired, my guard was down, I let slip my actual thoughts about Jews." And whaddaya know, those thoughts tend to confirm long held stereotypes about Jews and money.

I mean would "I'm sorry, I was tired" cut it if Thompson had said at some outdoor BBQ fundraiser, "Well, I like myself some ribs, just like you African-Americans. Pass me some watermelon"? Again, the comment wouldn't be hostile per se, but they'd give you a glimpse inside how his mind worked.

And the glimpse here demonstrated that Thompson holds a certain batch of antiquated ethnic stereotypes--and he thought this one was widely held and accepted, enough at least to say out loud, into a microphone, in public. Which prompts the question, does he hold further views on the Jews that he knows are less acceptable to be said aloud?

Well, I don't think he's an anti-Semite, at least in the strong sense.

Attribute his comments to a sort of vicious stupidity and leave it at that.

When I am waiting for the game I think it is just the suffering, the waiting time is very slow and you can not urge the time to pass quickly.
