Inside the Googleverse

I don't have a lot to say on the subject, but Justin Fox's ruminations about growing pains and a possible culture war within Google are pretty interesting. Relatedly, I was at a party the other day when I ran into a friend who works for Google, as well as one of her colleagues. Upon finding out that I was a blogger, the colleague launched into an intense, interminable sales pitch for Google's new campaign services, which are apparently...something. I don't know. It seemed pretty indistinguishable from all consulting services, and it was being sold with the same mix of buzzwords and bullshit. I zoned out for a few minutes, reflecting on what un-Google-like behavior this all was, zoned back in to find she was still explaining why I should write about the new model, and then I abruptly walked away. This is why it's hard for me to make new friends.

Yeah, but it's also why your current friends like you so much. That's hilarious.

Definitely hilarious. But the correct response to a live telemarketing campaign.

I recently spent about 2 months in the Google hiring grinder (unsuccessfully), so anything I could say would sound like sour grapes.

If she was hot enough, you could've offered to post about it in exchange for sex. Then the world would've had its first instance of literal blog-whoring.

if only whoring for a living were a joke- if you are in corp america it's not whether you are a whore- it's what kind.

Posted by: akaison | Mar 20, 2007 3:24:58 PM

ps- I know all this first hand because I too am a whore. Endlessly fascinated by shit that I wouldn't have thought about twice a decade ago. sad but true.

Dude, if I did that to all the boring people in the world, I wouldn't be commenting on this blog.

ZOINKS!

Oh jesus, Capt.

I have met the troll enemy and he is me!

maybe it's hard to make new friends because you start sentences with words like "relatedly"

[ducks various flying shoes, bricks, household goods, etc.]

I'd offer to be your friend if I could figure out a way to do so without sounding needy.

One thing I have to wonder. With the youtube everyone gets so pissed from the mainstream and scream infringement. That has justification but, at the same time either the person or the product or whatever that is being used gets noticed, seen and popularized.
Like that apple ad. Let's say it was never updated and kinda died out. Someone used it like now, it becomes very famous and everyone is talking about it and suddenly you, your product, ect. becomes well known and may generate big sales or whatever.

Absolutely the right reaction Ezra (as you well know). Not that she was necessarily wrong in trying. She was just clueless in not paying attention to her prospective victim. If she really cared about what she was doing, she would have noticed you zoning out and either changed tactics or the subject. Typical hard charger way of approaching things. Running through the script verbatim without actually listening to or looking at your subject.

She's just inept.

And because of that, your reaction was not rude in the least.

This brings to mind recent thoughts about Youtube. A series of parody videos which pretty much exemplify fair use (partial tv clips with parody audio dubbed on) was partially deleted... I know there's serious problems with legitimate infringement on youtube, but that was ridiculous.

Aww, we still like you, Ezra.
