Consider It Blogged

My new trivia technique is unstoppable. And it mainly consists of picking my team really well. But Dave is right: Great feats deserve bloggy triumphalism. And so let the history books record that with Julian Sanchez, Megan McArdle, Dave Weigel, and Lindsey Gibson arrayed around my table, the Liberaltarian alliance triumphed for the second time in a row, proving itself an enduring pub trivia force even as I continue to question the group's electoral applicability. We don't agree on health care, but we do agree on the importance of remembering old pop culture minutia, never questioning Weigel's musical judgment, and allowing Lindsey as much time as she need to let the universe whisper the names of soap opera characters to her.

Oh, and Megan? In Scrabble, the K is worth five, not four.

Since you are healthy enough for trivia, I can re-ask my question- After the cooking Bloggingheads, have you researched trans fatty acids?

Nope.

Ya, for a recently tooth de-rooted guy, you're kinda feisty today. Maybe another tooth or two is needed for appropriate humility - in face of the inevitability of the agony of defeat. Depending on Libertarians will get you into trouble every time, since they have very selective memory - which is, I suppose, better than the negative memory or made-up-memory of the Republicans.

Trans fats:

any packaged goods that contains "partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils", "hydrogenated vegetable oils" or "shortening" most likely contain trans fat
...
Similar to saturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids also increase LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) and lower HDL cholesterol (the Good cholesterol) therefore increasing the risk of heart disease. Some studies also showed that a diet high in trans fatty acids may be linked to a greater risk of Type 2 Diabetes.
...
In April 2004, the FDA Food Advisory Committee voted in favor of recommending that trans fatty acid intake level be reduced to "less than 1% of energy (2g per day of a 2000 kcal diet)"
...
Minimize the intake of both saturated fat and trans fat by checking the food labels. Effective January 1, 2006, all packaged food products must list trans fats content on the Nutrition Facts panel. The amount of trans fats per serving of food will appear under the Total Fat section of the label.

The real issue is use of trans fats in restaurants, since both saturated and partially hydrogenated oils make fried foods taste yummy, but are dangerous since no food labels are used. This is especially true for french fries in fast food or restaurants.

This is helpful for science geeks

The basis of the NYC ban on trans fats is that the customer isn't being informed that trans fats are used, and even with warning trans fats really clog up the arteries. It is a public health menace, so they banned its use. Rats might add flavor to restaurent foods, but they wouldn't be allowed, so why exempt trans fats from bans?

In trivia, distributing responsibilities and picking teammates based on specialties are both key.

Heh -- I know I need to, I'm just bogged down. And they're bad for you! I know that!

Oh, how I wish I lived in DC so I could assist in getting my favorite bloggers....absolutely plastered.
