Doves Coo Softly

By Neil the Ethical Werewolf

Matt Yglesias comments on the "Why don't American liberals care about reform in Iran?" attack that goes around despite American liberals' genuine and well-documented interest in improving conditions in Iran. (The AFL-CIO and the Feminist Majority Foundation are among the groups Matt cites.) We're at a disadvantage here because our solutions are a lot quieter than conservative solutions.  It's a lot easier to get noticed when you're calling for war than when you want something as wonkish and mild-mannered as the offer of an economic recovery package contingent on improvements in women's rights, or closely directed political pressure on some little-known Iranian figure.  Also, any of our proposals to work with reformist groups in Iran have to be communicated subtly -- we don't want to undermine the reformers by making them look like American puppets.  So we can't yell as loud as the pro-war people do.

On the other hand, there's a decent chance we actually do want things to get better in Iran.

How about asking "Why don't American conservatives care about reform in Iran?"? They seem determined to destroy any reform-oriented groups by uniting the Iranians around their most anti-American leaders. That is, after all, the predictable effect of the military actions they keep talking about. Hell, it's a predictable effect of their talking about military actions. So why on earth should anyone think conservatives give a damn about reform in Iran?

When the right talks about 'reform' in other countries, what they mean is military action, covert or not, to install a government that is friendly to US "interests," by which of course they mean the interests of large American corporations.

The fact is that there is very little Americans can do to change the conditions inside another country for the better, though as KCinDC points out there is plenty the US can do to make them worse.

A routine right-wing criticism of the left is that we spend more time talking about the crimes of the US government as opposed to those of the USSR, or Castro, or Saddam, or whoever is that day's enemy of all that is holy. Liberals often don't know how to respond to this, but the answer is simple: OF COURSE we devote more attention to the wrongdoing of our own country. It is OUR country. We are responsible for what our government does. Our ability to affect what the leaders in Iran do is basically nonexistent; our ability to affect what OUR leaders do is profound.

Who cares about Iran and its little Hitler president.

So much more fun to beat BushHitleHolliburton into pulp.
