Department of Cheap Irony
I'm not really sure what's being discussed at this AEI forum, but it's sort of awesome to host an event on "The Forgotten Man: A New Look at the Great Depression" and follow it up with a wine and cheese reception.

Were the servers dressed as members of a chain gang? Because that would be awesome.

Will there be cake? I hope they serve cake. Please God, let them eat cake.

Well, too often we focus on the bad things about the Great Depression. What about all the good things? It wasn't all bad for everyone, you know, and it's about time that someone stood up for those who had a good time in those years.

Well, let's be fair. Maybe everyone will have to stand in a 2-hour line to get a shotglass full of boxed wine and a half-slice of an Kraft Cheese single.

Are there going to be apple and pencil sellers there during the wine/cheese (with a hat on the floor for the contributions)? Apples go well with cheese, and pencils are needed to get the cell numbers of the AEI deep thinkers.

Perhaps they can take lessons from the Depression to propose solutions for the problems of the homeless and poverty today. For example, as documented in My Man Godfrey, opening swank nightclubs on landfills is a good way to help out homeless "forgotten men."

All the meetings dealing with The Depression I've been to require old, tattered clothing and fasting for two meals beforehand.

Walker Evans' grand-nephew will be there to take photos of the event.

The Great Depression was a creation of the liberal media! The souplines were full of freeloaders.

And those WPA jobs were really awesome resume builders too!

Given that it's AEI, my guess would be that the running theme will be that the Forgotten Man (whoever he was) was far more responsible for ending the Depression than Roosevelt or anyone in his administration.

You may consider it ironic, but I'm glad they are having this event. It shows they are finally starting to take steps to admit that it happened. By the middle of this century, they'll be ready to admit there may have been some problems in Latin America in the 1990s. Perhaps at that party, they will offer coffee beans and cocaine, which we all know is what they really wanted at the Depression event. Again, kudos for catching up with the rest of us. Better late, than never.

What planet do you live on, Akaison? The premises of your comments are just bizarre.
Posted by: Sanpete | Feb 16, 2007 2:11:05 PM
What's the premise of my comment Sanpete?
Posted by: akaison | Feb 16, 2007 2:40:52 PM
Your premises appear to be that AEI denies that there was a Great Depression and problems in Latin America in the 1990s.

Oh come on - if we're supposed to get on a liberal horse every time one of these things has a reception with refreshments,... I mean just because I go to a forum on world hunger, I should starve? It's not the depression. Have some wine and cheese.
And get over it. But I say it with love. :)

Nope
Posted by: akaison | Feb 16, 2007 3:44:48 PM
Well, then what you say just makes no sense.

eddie murphy story: So my wife catches me having sex with another woman. She stomps into the room irate. Yelling and screaming. "How dare you cheat on me. How dare you make love to another woman?" Eddie's response: It's not what it looks like. I didn't make love to her, I make love to you.
Moral of the story: there is more than one way to deny the existence of a thing. Sometimes you do it frontally by denial of the whole or you do it indirectly by denial of important components that leads to understanding.
the same denial that operates with the great depression is operative when reading about latin america.

This is almost as funny as that time Rush Limbaugh told that joke about stuck up liberal elites flying to global climate change conferences in their fancy jets. Almost.
