Webb Plays Hardball

Now this is how it's done. Notice anything funny about Jim Webb's press release responding to George Allen's attacks? I'll give you a hint: George Allen is never mentioned. Instead, George Felix Allen Jr. makes a series of appearances. From a masculine, almost movie star-ish name to a silly, four worder that ends with a diminutive, the more Webb blasts "George Felix Allen Jr." the more Allen's much vaunted masculine authenticity will look like the show it is.

Damn, that's fine fightback. Give us more of those kind.

Minor word usage argument:

Diminutive isn't quite the right word for the "Jr.". (although I do like Jr. used in the way Webb's guy did).

Georgie is a diminutive. or Georgekin. Fred Jones is fond of using child-names here (like Bobby), with clear intent to attack and diminish those who he disagrees with, rather than address their arguments. [Rove: ch. 3]

Of or being a suffix that indicates smallness or, by semantic extension, qualities such as youth, familiarity, affection, or contempt, as -let in booklet, -kin in lambkin, or -et in nymphet.
n : a word that is formed with a suffix (such as -let or -kin) to indicate smallness

How is this different from GHW Bush calling Pete DuPont "Pierre" in a debate? It is his real name, but using someone's name against them seems pretty weak. Find something he did -- can't be too hard in Allen's case -- and hammer that, not the name his mother gave him.

Yeesh, like there's anything wrong with that. I don't find someone from the insane duPont clan being called by their actual given name to be actually wrong.

Shhesh, no wonder we lose. Bob Shrum likes your tactics. If even something that innocuous is too beyond the pale for you, don't be a political advisor.

This makes me weep with joy.

finally, we agree- I've been stopping here for a couple of weeks, and I was wondering would it ever happen. I mean on sites like Andrew Sullivan it took a few months, but here it happened in 2 weeks.

And yes, this is a great statement. Every Democrat should have their own version of clinton's war room where they respond to these sorts of attack within the 24 hour news cycle using the kind of effective language that Webb used against Allen. Don't give them a chance to get the upper hand or to fall back on old strategies. force them to make mistakes.

George Felix Allen is the son of George Herbert Allen and is therefore no junior. Webb certainly knows this. The reason for the "Jr" is that the elder George Allen was the well-loved head coach of the Washington Redskins in the 1970's. Being the son of a local hero is what got Allen elected in the first place. The "Jr" is intended to remind everyone that the pipsqueak son is not the man his dad was.

So "Jr" is wrong. And what's Allen going to do about it? Complain that because his middle name is Felix he's not a "Jr"? This is just the sort of mistake a candidate should make- you insult your opponent by getting his name wrong, and if he corrects you he looks like an wanker.

I think the concept of masculine authenticity is very redicoulous both to an extant for Webb as well as even more to Allen, but do you think anybody knows about press releases.

"That's the way"
(uh huh uh huh)
"I like it"

Jr, Sr, whatever. "Glass dude ranch" is the killer phrase here. Go blue team.

Well, this lie seems to be just fine with Jim when he thinks his agenda may be served, but somehow a terrible practice when it's leveled against him! Isn'that righ 'Li'l Jimmy'?

Yeah, that's right, Li'l Freddy. By the way, fuck you.

the concept of masculinity is so crazy that Bush bought a ranch right before the 2000 run for election and argued to make certain that he did not appear shorter than Kerry in the debate. Image has nothing to do with politics. it's all substance.

Posted by: akaison | Jun 28, 2006 9:50:47 AM

Did it work?

Posted by: Kylroy | Jun 28, 2006 9:55:28 AM

IOW, for Fred, it's OK to do that if you call yourself conservative GOP, but you should burn in hell if you're one of them evil libruls.

Is that about right, Fred? The libruls should burnm in hell because they;re not the right ones to make the argument?

Elitist prick.

Jeepers, why is there a problem with "Felix"? I mean, it's a lovely FRENCH name.

Nominate someone named Oscar as his running mate, perhaps?
