Global Warming vs. Global Awareness
by Nicholas Beaudrot of Electoral Math
An Inconvenient Truth is almost certainly worth seeing, even if you're alreay a dyed-in-the-wool supporter of the Kyoto protocol. Matt Yglesias gets the movie's impact more or less right: "issue films" like this one will only cause political change if they fundamentally alter the current political landscape, by pushing the issue to the forefront such that political pain comes to any candidate who doesn't take global warming seriously. Whether Al Gore's vehicle can propel climate change to the top of the issue pile all on its own is unclear. To reach tens of millions of viewers, Truth will have to find its way into full-scale release in thousands of theaters across the cuntry; it's currently slated to reach about 300 theaters by the end of June.

I assume it will eventually get on cable:one of the science channels or even a pay-movie channel. That still means a relatively small audience compared ro theaters.

We just saw it this afternoon. I had the same stomach flip thing when it briefly touched on the 2000 election that I had with Fahrenheit 911, but the rest of it was quite engrossing. It was excellent, but judging from the audience response, the showing we saw was preaching to the choir.

i just saw it this afternoon also...and had all of the same reactions, and i felt tearful during the brief scenes from the election.
....one could only imagine what this country would be like, had gore become president. the loss still makes one feel brokenhearted.
.....i also think he is perhaps the greatest american in public life right now. i greatly admire his courage to move ahead after so much disillusionment and crushing loss, without losing his sense of hope in the country or its future. it takes a very remarkable person to rise above circumstances, cynicism and bitterness and continue fighting the good fight.
....i think he is a really noble and great man.

I disagree that it is essential for the film to have a wider release (although it would help).
What is required is for those who accept reality to finally start treating the deniers as the fruitcakes that they are.
Honestly, I have more contempt for those who believe in global warming and do next to nothing than I do for those who ignorantly profess that the jury is still out.

I have heard Gore holds up China as having better emission standards than the United States. This is a joke.
China is an environmental disaster and it is not because of its laws. It is because of the lack of enforcement of the laws. China’s car emission laws may be better than the United States’, but that is basically irrelevant because there are a huge number of cars there whose emissions would probably not meet anyone’s standards.
