Maybe We Just Like Child Poverty
Read Brad on the depressing factoid that while the UK has been reducing child poverty by 17 percent, America has been increasing it by 12. Sorrowful stuff. The info comes from Jared Bernstein and Mark Greenberg's op-ed in today's Washington Post, laying out Britain's efforts and successes after Blair's government announced that they end child poverty by 2020 and contrasting it with America's total inattention to the problem. Bernstein, the resident poverty expert at EPI, is quite close to John Edwards, so at least someone with a role in the national debate is listening to this stuff.

The Right want desperately to punish the poor children's parents because they think it's the poor's fault that they're poor. They see it as sending a message - "Don't get poor." It's just easier for them to keep around whipping boys and girls instead of solving the problem.

"Maybe We Just Like Child Poverty"
It's a way for us to have cheap sneakers without increasing the trade deficit.
What's not to like?

I am all for eliminating child poverty. Some things, like state funded child care, make a lot of sense to me. Others options don't, and we do have to be careful of both unintended consequences of welfare programs and making sure we don't harm economic growth. It is a fine line to walk.
One thing I wonder about in comparisons with other nations is if we are comparing apples to apples or not. 'Poverty' isn't an objective definition. We decide what level of income (and the associated standard of living) constitutes poverty therefore poverty in Britain and poverty in the U.S. may well be entirely different things. We could reduce the amount of poverty dramatically by defining poverty lower than we define it now, this of course wouldn't change the actual living conditions of those affected though.

This would be about as effective as lowering crime stats by repealing legislation criminalizing different activities ( but possibly not totally a bad idea if one started with the idea of reviewing law from the oldest first ). America does have welfare : it's called jail.

From Bernstein's WaPo commentary:
But what's amazing about all this is that elected officials in a major advanced economy decided to try to do something about a trend they viewed as unjust and ultimately harmful to the prospects of their society
... opponents initially warned that investing significant national resources in ending child poverty was incompatible with global competition. We asked one politician about this. His response: "How can the U.K. compete globally if a third of our children grow up poor?"
The contrast between attitudes in the UK government and the Republican US leadership breaks one's heart and simply makes you want to both cry and rise up in anger.
And the anti-abortion folks scream about the sanctity of life, while doing nothing on child rearing and arguing that contraception is immoral.
Give us this day our daily shame....

"Poverty is measured here as below 60 per cent of contemporary median net disposable income in 2000/01." http://www.oxfamgb.org/ukpp/poverty/thefacts.htm#2

We'll eliminate childhood poverty in the US the moment someone figures out a way to do it that doesn't entail transfer payments to people who are the Wrong Color.
And not until.
