Link of the Day

Can Democrats fight the Republican image of swaggering machismo by crafting reputations as clever, wily strategists?

Yes, but for me, "craftiness" isn't the right word.

"sophisticated, effective security; humane, peaceful protection"? I'm not good with sloganeering, but I know it when I see something really good (I just can't create it myself).

We need something that encapsulates the effectiveness of the intelligent, thoughtful approach to security. The strength of recognizing the threats and dealing with them nimbly and with precision. Ethics, humanity. Protecting our citizen's freedom from threats to our individual security, including government and corporate overreach. Protection of our environment and the sharing of our nation's bounty.

"We need something that encapsulates the effectiveness of the intelligent, thoughtful approach to security."

It is going to take the total loss of a major American city before we become Sweden. And then you aren't going to like the consequences. Israel, the automobile, and the suburbs are probably gone.

The Arabs/Islamic world are not ready to be nuclear powers, to the Western world's shame. They will use them. Since we really can't retaliate, we will surrender, and play a long term subversion and cooption game.

Absolutely. This is the perfect example of not fighting your image on an issue, but nullifying your opponent AND doing so in a positive way. By regretfully pointing out that the Administration's intentions may have been good, but their execution half-assed, we can avoid framing our discussion as an opposition of their perceived intent -- protecting Americans -- which puts on the wrong side of the issue in a gut-level sense.

Another one of the reasons I desperately want to see Wesely Clark on the table as nominee or VP pick.

There was a time the slogan went : " Walk softly and carry a big stick." That was reasonable defence.

After reading the fortuna entry I'm reminded of Sheridan : The best defence is a good offence. An attitude like that is appropriate to warmaking.... oh, riiiight.
