2004 The Remix

While we're talking about Tim Kaine again, another thing that concerns me about his selection: The Democratic Party has a tendency to fight the last battle when it's time for the next war. Kaine's selection is an explicit attempt to address the "values question". His claim to fame is not simply winning election in a pink-tinged state (Brad Henry or Evan Bayh would be more impressive on sheer triumph-over-registration grounds), but doing so through constant, authentic, and successful invocation of his Catholicism.

See? The Democratic Party is religious!

But setting aside my hand-wringing over the implications of his win, the battle du jour isn't religion, but corruption. Republicans would love for us to make 2006 a reprise of 2004's lame protestations of piety. What they'd prefer not to deal with is a focused critique on the nexus of Republican dominance, lobbyist influence, and corporate power. Deploying, say, an Elliot Spitzer to argue that case would make sense. It would be relevant. Tim Kaine, however, is not the party's most visible or credentialed spokesperson on anticorruption issues. He's uniquely relevant to 2004's election, but not 2006's. The question is, which one do Democrats think comes next?

I should say, by the way, that I quite like Tim Kaine. I'm glad he won in Virginia. I'm sure he'll be a good governor. But I don't think he's the right face for the party. Televised speeches are superficial affairs and they're judged on superficial grounds. Thinking him wrong for this job is not the same as thinking him a bad guy, or even a bad Democrat.

That's what, 4 posts on Kaine? You're starting to sound obsessed...

When Bush's polls tanked, there was some speculation about what his rock bottom truly was. At least among the blogosphere, there seemed to be a consensus of somewhere in the 30's.

Why are the Democrats trying to appeal to these people? The contribute nothing to the national discourse but fear and hate. They will not be convinced, they will not be persuaded. By continually trying to win over these idiots, the Democrats actually become less appealing to those who would normally want to vote for them.

What do we have to do? Wait for the DLC people to all grow old and die? The GOP is imploding, scandal everywhere, Bush can't get his signature policies passed in a friendly Congress, and the Democratic leadership seems intent upon doing all they can to ensure a GOP government for at least 2 more years.

Guess what DNC, DLC and everyone else: don't tell us out here in the trenches how to win elections. We're the ones who will vote - or not - for you. Make yourselves something worth voting for. That's how you win elections.

Wow, can't believe Democrats dropped the ball here, that's so unlike them.

Posted by: Matt | Jan 30, 2006 12:16:59 PM

Since this topic is snowballing why not consider turning it around.

A decade or so ago, there was a best-selling business book that offered some sound investment advice. Whenever the author was invited to an IPO presentation he looked for a guy with brown shoes and/or rumpled suit. If there wasn't one accompanying the slick saleman, he would not invest.

You're right, Ezra, that looks affect outcomes -- but people who succeed despite a less telegenic appearance might just have more to offer than their opposites. Maybe it is past time to start pointing that out.

Posted by: Emma Zahn | Jan 30, 2006 12:45:19 PM

This strikes me as a complete non-issue. Very few people watch the response to the SoTU. It is not, and cannot be, an integral part of the 2006 elections, which even fewer people care about right now.

Anyway, Tim Kaine won the most prominent election in the country just a few months ago. He has earned what little spotlight this event can give him.

Posted by: P.M. Bryant | Jan 30, 2006 12:45:22 PM

It's a non-issue for more reasons that that! Democrats like Ezra should be more worried about their message than about what they look like. If they simply give the voters what they want, they wouldn't have to worry about having to fool them with pretty people and how smooth they must be on TV.

Message, bebe......message

See...based on your grounds for arguing against Kaine, I actually think he was a good choice. Give him the right talking points against corruption, and I think he'll be able to get them across. On tv, he comes across as a decent man from middle America--based on what I've seen, that's the kind of guy for now that we want as our face (though I agree with many when I say I would have preferred Obama).

Posted by: Marc | Jan 30, 2006 3:53:05 PM

Unless, of course, you're just trying to lower expectations so he'll look better--hehe, I watch too much West Wing.

Posted by: Marc | Jan 30, 2006 3:54:27 PM

Except of course that Brad Henry was elected in a state with a majority Dem. registration. And, picked up all the anti-cockfighting vote.

"Results matter. Planning matters. Management matters, and you can make much more progress if you do it in a bipartisan way," [Kaine] said.

Q: What does bipartisanship have to do with good government?

A: Nothing.

Legislation can be good, bad or so-so. Who makes the legislation should matter very little. Unfortunately it doesn't. Legislation generally benefits some groups of people over others. The leadership of this Republican party is unfortunately tainted by some ridiculously corrupt individuals. Its the leadership that sets the tone and the rules for the rest of the party. I'm confused why Kaine thinks a little more reaching across the isle is going to change anything. Democrats have already conceeded an aweful lot of what should be their principles in the past 8 or so years. What have we gotten in return?

Posted by: Adrock | Jan 31, 2006 11:59:46 AM

Kaine is willing to sign a Virginia law not only outlawing gay marriage, but also outlawing the contractual arrangements that gay people enter into to try to approximate some of the benefits that straight people get from the legal structure.

Some values!

More or less not much exciting happening today. I just don't have anything to say. More or less nothing seems worth bothering with.

Posted by: Lee | Oct 4, 2007 8:28:16 AM

I've just been staying at home waiting for something to happen. I just don't have much to say right now, but so it goes. I've basically been doing nothing to speak of, but shrug. Today was a loss. I don't care. That's how it is.
