Ugh
I've been trying to settle on the right word for the Bush administration's decision to start Alito off with a photo-op in front of Rosa Park's casket. For now, I'm going with "despicable", which just barely beat out "repulsive" and "enraging", but I'm open to other suggestions. This, is, by the way, an open Alito thread, share your links and knowledge.

Rove's legacy on this despicable, repulsive, and enraging act is so typical of Bu$hCo. Pick the most obvious stick to poke into the eyes of those likely to opppose Alito and ram it in deep.
Rove: Find a fallen liberal icon like Rosa Parks, and send a judge who has written opinions to weaken anti-discrimination laws and have him go spit and piss on her casket - in the rotunda of the US Capitol, no less. Maybe the correct spelling should be US Capital.
'The best defense is a good offense', Rove chuckles to his totalitarian acolytes.
Symbols cut both ways on occasions. Dems should make this nomination war about Rosa Parks v. Alito.

It is a obvious that the candidate for the Supreme Court would be touring the Capitol today. That always happens.
Are you suggesting that while there he should pointedly avoid seeing Rosa Parks lying in state? What would you say about him if he did that?

What a difference a few days make. The Left felt so good on Thursday and today, well, you know.
I think this is the turning point for Bush. Rove is back to work and the base is behind Bush again.

Well, the Democrats kept their powder dry in case of an extreme nomination. This is it. I'm not sure about filibuster, but I don't see how Scalito could curry the favor of one Democrat. This is an easy "nay" vote.
Plus, this can be worked into every Senate campaign. Any Republican in a blue state that votes for Scalito can be easily tarred-and-feathered as supporting wingnuts and the wingnut crusade.
Even if he gets on the court (looks likely), use this as an anvil to ring around the neck of all the "yea" votes.

Ginsberg has made sure this nomination will be confirmed. Her extreme views on prostitution and the age of consent, her position as an ACLU attorney and, of course, the 'Ginsberg Rule'.
A political party of class would respect the voters and Presidents wishes instead of trying to impose their views on the will of the people. Check out Ginsberg's confirmation vote. Don't forget, Bush ran on putting a strict constructionalist in the mold of Scalia or Thomas on the bench. Don't forget Bush won!
Now who would want to thwart the will of the people?

Hey Cap'n, Ginsburg was a choice of Orin Hatch. The two don't relate unless Harry Reid gets to choose which conservative Bush will appoint. Bush consulted with no one on the other side with Scalito.
Oh, and the majority of Americans don't like Bush anymore. That's been apparent for a couple of months now.

Are you relying on polls? I'll rely on the election, and those results last four years. Do you remember when the left got all excited cuz the exit polls said Kerry was going to win the election? The polls were wrong! I would have thought the left learned not to rely on polls after the 2004 election. But, then again, I would have thought they learned something from the 'moral values' issue, gay marriage, Howard Dean, etc.

What a surprise. Of course, McConnell would be friendlier towards exceptions to federal anti-drug laws, which the Cap'n constantly brags about breaking, while simultaneously supporting ever more power for religious conservatives that loathe all drug use.

Well, with ~60% turnout, both sources could be right, since Bush was elected by 32% of eligible voters.
The election is the only "poll" that actually counts.
Unless it's the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections, of course. Because then you have Orrin Hatch presenting his list of acceptable Supreme Court nominees, and blocking more than sixty judicial nominees from a full up-or-down vote. You also have a cadre of Republican senators mounting a filibuster against two judicial nominees in 2000. Come to think of it, LBJ won in 1964 and Democrats controlled the Senate, yet the will of the majority was defied by the filibuster of Abe Fortas. Good thing the filibuster exists to protect the voice of the minority in our Senate and our republic.
And since Bush did win the 2004 election, where's the up-or-down vote of the full Senate for his first pick, Harriet Miers? Too bad she failed a conservative litmus test, and the White House wasn't going to release documents that Republican senators wanted to see.

What a coincidence that she suddenly decided she didn't want the nomination she accepted in the first place, even as more of the religious right (including Dobson) were turning on her. So now the standard is that CWA and Focus on the Family get to block nominees from even reaching the Judiciary committee? Alito came off of Dobson's short list, making it clear that he has co-opted the "advise" power, so I guess it makes sense to transfer the "consent" power to him as well.
No one liked her except Ezra.
And, of course, George W. Bush, who won the election and nominated her. Yet a small segment of the electorate blocked his wishes. Imagine that.
