The Right Questions
Now this is what I'm talking about:
Senate Democrats said yesterday that they will invoke the vast disparities in income and living conditions laid bare by the Hurricane Katrina disaster to sharpen their questioning of Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. at his confirmation hearings next week.
...
With Roberts having urged a narrow interpretation of civil rights laws in the past, Senate Democrats will link the scenes of economic hardship with the constitutional and legal issues that surround efforts to address racial and economic inequalities, he said.
''We have made very important progress over the period of the last 50 years in knocking down walls of discrimination so that people can participate and be a part of a changed America," said Kennedy, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. ''And he's going to be asked to explain some of his advice that would have, I think, undermined that progress in important ways."

Wow. Talk about a stretch to politicize a disaster.

This is precisely right. We aren't talking
about a stealth anything -- this is a man
who clerked for Separate-But-Equal Rehnquist
and once scratched out the phrase "Civil War"
in a memo to write "War Between The States."
When you come from northern Indiana, not the
South, and go to Harvard, writing said phrase
pretty much screams to anyone who'll listen,
"I grew up a William F. Buckley racist!"
I suppose, on the bright side, that that's a
small step up from old "torture memo" Gonazales.

Of all the ridiculous things that the Senate Democrats have said and done in recent decades, this is close to a high water mark. What the hell does New Orleans's failure to take care of its most helpless and vulnerable people have to do with whether John Roberts is qualified to be Chief Justice?
And, by the way, weren't the Senate Democrats saying just a few days ago that it would be so much easier to confirm a conservative justice to replace Rehnquist since that would not have any impact on the balance on the Court? I guess that was just so much hot air - they don't care about balance or qualifications, just politics.

"New Orleans's failure," my hairy pink ass.
Katrina exposed the rank and putrid racism
that underlies "the South" and the US as a
whole. As a partisan, you would appear
impervious to fact and logic, but perhaps
a second thought on your part is in order.
No partisan (waaaaaaay to the left of D's),
I am fucking enraged. That you could watch
footage of what this country just did to its
most helpless, vulnerable, poor and black
residents and strenuously object to asking
Mr. War-Between-The-States about race says
a whole lot about you and yours. That the
Democrats are finally standing up for their
purported ideals is to their credit; that
the party of Lincoln would nominate yet
another judge who believes the Constitution
ends with the 12th Amendment (perhaps even
before) is foul and despicable.
If you don't think Katrina exposed racism
in the US, you're blind. If you think Roberts
no racist, great -- let's see some evidence.

What every Democratic senator needs to do is vote against Roberts and any other conservative judicial nominees that come forward.
The time for cordiality is over. Dems cannot just blame BushCo for continuing to fail in every endeavor, when they voted to confirm these nubskulls or passed idiotic tax cuts, bankruptcy legislation, etc.
