Wrong Audience

RNC Chair Ken Mehlman apparently went before the NAACP yesterday to apologize for Nixon's Southern Strategy. Republicans, he said, were wrong to use race as a wedge.

Phony.

When Mehlman goes before Southern whites and says it was wrong to use race as a wedge issue, then I'll buy his sincerity. The test here isn't whether he can pander to those he offended, but whether he can confront those who flocked to the offense. Apologizing for embezzlement while living off the cash is not the most powerful of moral statements.

Better than nothing, which is what you get from most Republicans regarding their unceasing appeal to bigotry.

I'm mystified by this use of the past tense.

Maybe in forty years the GOP spokesperson will apologize for the gay-bashing.

Bob Dole pretty much did that during the 1996 convention ("the exits are clearly marked"). Since he left off the obvious caveat necessary ("I hereby announce my resignation from the Republican party and officially join and endorse the Democratic nominee"), it didn't go over well with those who think that the opposition is a bunch of idiotic bigots. One thing I've learned over the years is that it doesn't matter what I do or say, I'm still suspect amongst the usual suspects simply because I'm a southern white Republican and can only cleanse my soul when I do the right thing and become a Democrat.

I know Robert Byrd apologized for being in the Klan. Has Robert Byrd ever apologized for his behavior during the 1964 Civil Rights Act?

"The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act -- supported by a majority of those "mean-spirited" Republicans -- for more than 14 hours."

"The ex-Klansman vowed never to fight "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

I hope he did.

Did Al Gore ever apoloze for his dad?

I wonder who appointed more minorities and women to high positions in US courts and in gov't, Bill Clinton or George W Bush?

Damn, there goes my defense strategy.

Did Democrats or Republicans push and pass the Civil Rights Act? Really -- which was it? Because if one party staked themselves on pushing a civil rights agenda and one party built electoral wins on exploiting white racism, your use of individuals would seem pretty stupid, wouldn't it...

Jim Jones started out really trying to help poor minorities. Then his desire for power overwelmed his generosity.

Look at the Democrats 'Great Society', it has destroyed the black family. Instead of trying to correct the problem, the Dems desire for power keeps the Dems keeping the black family dependant on welfare.

Maybe way back when the Democrats were better for minorities, but not today. Bush so far has appointed more minorities to high gov't offices than any Democrat ever (keep in mind, his predecessor was the first black president).

It doesn't count to liberals tho(Bush appointing minorities), cuz they aren't LIBERAL minorities.

You know why minorities are falling off the liberal bandwagon? Most minorities in this country are religious, abortion and gay marriage don't sit well with them. Many are starting to recognize that the welfare state is destroying the black family. Check out some statistics for the illegitamacy rate and marriage stats for blacks in 1965 and compare those to 2005.

Blacks are still mostly Democrat. Getting a check for having babies out of wedlock is still appealing to a lot of them, especially if they grw up like that, but the cycle is breaking for some.

Next time you are at a rally and you see a white union person there to support the candidate, get into a conversation with him about the virtues of affirmative action and see what happens.

Oh, but engaging a white union member, who only votes for liberals cuz union bosses tell him it will keep his job, but engaging a white union member on just about any other part of the liberal ideology, that would be just stupid, now wouldn't it?

By the way, that is how I got a few of my union friends in Ohio (they work at the Firestone plant in Akron) to stay home on election day. They just could not support the gay marriage/affirmative action candidate.

Like I said earlier, Jim Jones started out trying to help the poor, but his desire for power led him to do everything he could to keep his flock with him. And we all know the rest of that story.

By the way, just a little factoid. When the right refers to liberal 'kool aid drinkers', that is where that reference comes from.

"Did Democrats or Republicans push and pass the Civil Rights Act?"
It was a combination of both, with LBJ and midwestern/northern Republicans aligning with their like-minded Democrats to defeat the southern Democrats (Republicans were out of power in the south at the time, and the next few decades). This information is easily attained via google - can't believe it's not being taught in schools - and LBJ himself said that he couldn't have gotten it done with Repubs at the time (to be fair, I don't think that many of them were of the conservative bent, but I'm generalizing) because of some of the more segregationist Dems in the party (for more on segregationist Dems, see "school busing in Boston"). The GOP has a lot to be ashamed about, but the civil rights act isn't one of them.
and one party built electoral wins on exploiting white racism, your use of individuals would seem pretty stupid, wouldn't it...
Yes, it would be pretty stupid to use individuals, which makes the post itself (it's about Richard Nixon's campaign) and the notation to "electoral wins" pretty astounding since that applies to a single race every 4 years.

Here is some recent history:
http://www.rjwest.com/blog/index.php?p=2268

And as a lifelong resident of the deep south who readily admits bigotry within the GOP, I hereby give fair warning if you think that the Dems weren't and haven't been just as bad (or WORSE) in the south.

They're right to apologize for the southern strategy, but it's akin to Canada apologizing for Ben Johnson using steroids.....old cheaters from decades gone by mean little today.

Ahem, should say "couldn't have gotten it done WITHOUT Repubs at the time", above.
