So True

Wolcott:

Kevin Drum says he's going to let out a primal scream if one more commentator praises Londoners for their collective "stiff upper lip" in carrying on in the face of adversity. Me, I'm more of a groaner, though I appreciate British understatement and placid fortitude as much as anyone. The curious thing is that so many of the rightward bloggers and Fox Newswers who are hailing the Brits for their quiet stoicism and pluck don't seem to realize they're issuing an implicit rebuke to themselves and their fellow Americans. They're saying, in effect, "You've got to admire the Brits for showing calm and quiet perserverence after these explosions--they don't get all hysterical, overdramatic, and overreactive the way we Americans do." They don't seem to realize the example shown by Londoners might be a lesson to them, a model they might follow instead of playing laptop Pattons at full volume every time they feel a rousing post coming on.

They reminded me of the Israeli's after an attack, they were calm, their emergency services got to the seen quick and as the day wore on London started working on getting back to normal. Don't forget London's history: WWII and the IRA, if the citizens had not personally experienced terror, a family member had probably at least witnessed it.

Lets look at context:

7/7: 4 to 7 small bombs(small compared to airplanes) went off within seconds of each other in and beneath London. The area was secured and emergency services went to work. They shut down the subway and transportation in London. I am sure structural engineers had to come in and evaluate the subway.

9/11: 4 commercial airplane are hijacked. One smashes into the US's top military/gov't building. Two smash into one of the world's most massive structures. When the passengers of the fourth plane find out what is happening, they take their plane down to save lives. That was a couple hour period and we weren't sure what was coming next(or did you forget already?).

I sure hope they weren't hysterical while they crashed that plane into that Pennsylvania field, that would be an embarrassment to the USA, huh?

The gov't shuts down the commercial air traffic in the US. Emergency services gets to work on the Pentagon and the WTC, both of which were ablaze with fires fueled by jet juel. People are jumping out of windows 80+ stories cuz they have been in the burning WTC for hours, can't get out and the fire is so hot and close to them that they'd rather jump. During the rescue efforts with hundreds if not thousands of civilians and rescue workers in the WTC, one of the most massive structures in the WORLD, the WTC comes crashing down. One of the biggest cities in the world, if not the biggest, is filled with smoke and debris from the worst terrorist attack in world history. Does anyone remember the view from the water or air? The city was engulfed by a plume of smoke, it looked like someone nuked NYC.

7/7: 50 dead
9/11: 3000 dead

Do you remember the video of the smoke from the collapsing WTC chasing those hysterical people down the streets while they are trying to get indoors? Do you think they saw a camera and decided to get over-dramatic so they could get on TV? Were they out of line? Over-reacting?

Boy us FoxNewsers should be ashamed, them Israeli's would get attacked by a suicide bomber at a resturaunt in the morning and by dinner, the same resturaunt would be open. We just let that fire burn below the WTC for months. For shame.

Let's contrast this with the atmosphere after the anthrax attacks or the DC sniper, shall we?

------"Let's contrast this with the atmosphere after the anthrax attacks or the DC sniper, shall we?"

OK

After the anthrax attacks the post offices closed(the ones that had traces of anthrax), some postal employees didn't go to work. Gov't offices and other high profile targets instituted new policies as far as the mail went.

Hysteria?

Whenever there was a DC shooting, the police would close off the area and investigate.

The DC snipers caused people to be leary about being in open spaces(like pumping gas), just like the Ohio freeway sniper and the LA freeway shooter. Were people scared? Of course!

I bet if there was a bomb going off in the subway every 3 or 4 days that subway usage in London would drop dramatically.

I don't remember any mass movement by the people to stay home. I don't remember any video of people running around like Mccauley Culkin in "Home Alone" after a DC shooting.

But I am pretty sure they were comparing 9/11 and 7/7. There really is no comparison, don't you think?

I don't know about that. For instance, several businesses closing around here closed because the mail room received an envelope with the faintest trace of white powder.

Well, maybe you live in Berkley. Or maybe those businesses you're talking about were your neighbor's kid's lemonade stands.

I don't know of any businesses that shut down cuz of the anthrax scare. Some gov't buildings shut down if there were suspicions and the place was checked out. There were a few false alarms and hoaxes around the country. The hoaxes stopped when they started putting people in prison.

There was no hysteria.

But that does not matter cuz they were not refering to the anthrax scare. They were comparing 09/11/2001 and 07/07/2005. And like I illistrated rather well above, there is no comparison, is there?

'Now stick that in you pipe and smoke it!'
