Saber's Quiet
I tend to agree with Brad on this. Roberts is the pick. He'll most likely be confirmed. He most likely won't be filibustered. In any case, nothing will progress on that front for weeks yet, not until the Senate hearings start. So drop it. Don't spend the next month or two saber-rattling and talking about arrested kids with french fry breath. There'll be plenty of time for that later. For now, the Roberts announcement was moved up a week two knock Rove out of the news. Had Bush chosen a nutball, we could've wailed and beaten our breasts for the next six weeks. But in their rush for good press, the President chose a guy that there's nothing much to say about. So let's not say anything. Let him drift out of the news cycle and, in a day or two, make it all Rove, all the time. That's where their weak spot is, let's not lose focus and attack at the only smart thing they've done in months.

You gotta admit though its kinda funny that the biggest selling point for the Democratic party aside from jobs and health care has been the importance of the supreme court, and now it's like, "shrug, oh well."

That'd be funnier if it was, you know, true, but I haven't noticed the judicial argument being so central to Democrats. But assume it was: then voters heard us, rejected us, and will get the Court they voted for, Balls out opposition is undemocratic in that case. Of course, elections are binary choices in a decidedly non-binary policy sphere (it's very weird that if you elect one guy mainly on terrorism, you get all his other opinions too) and it's very unclear what sort of Court Americans want. So Democrats should loudly oppose, make sure the facts get out, but they shouldn't filibuster unless it's truly necessary.

Are you really under some impression that you and your readers have any perceptible influence on the news cycle? Get real. The Roberts story will be what it is, with or without Ezra Klein.

Pincus and VandeHei agree.
Heh.

Ezra, well most of that sounds reasonable I suppose, I was just pissed off at what seems like Democrats rolling over yet again. But..
but I haven't noticed the judicial argument being so central to Democrats
We've been told constantly since the 2000 campaign about the importance of the supreme court, it was a massive selling point for both Gore and Kerry. C'mon now.

Dude, don't know where you've been, but blogs (both left and right) have been having a fairly strong influence on the news media for a couple years now.

Infuence is one thing but direct marching orders seems a bit beyond.

It is really quite funny that Ann Coulter issued some sort of statement to say that she is extremely unhappy with the Chimpresident's pick. Having never taken her seriously, I didn't really read the finer points of her argument against Roberts, but I think it is amusing enough to think that the wingnuts might be getting the willies about Roberts simply because the Democrats aren't vomiting on cue at the mention of his name.

Well sprocket,
If I were spoonfed day after day, month after month that Conservatives were of one opinion by democraticunderground, Moveon.org and other wild-eyed and fringy radical organizations, I would probably be just as surprised as you are.

I think there might be some difference between liberal and regime-ated.
