Sigh

Silly Brooks. If Western Europe has discredited liberalism, than the Gilded Age discredited conservatism. And saying that single-payer health care -- what with its lower cost, universal coverage, and better outcomes -- has been proven unworkable is particularly absurd. So, for that matter, is blaming Western Europe's stagnation of social policies rather than, for instance, on the fact that they work many fewer hours than we do.

Anyway, egregious column. Think we can get Brooks behind the subscription wall early?

What’s wrong with Bobo’s column? For starters: offensive, ignorant, and uninformed. And that is just the first few paragraphs. [Read More]

Europe (and, to a lesser extent, Japan) seems to be engaged in an experiment to develop a sort of 'steady-state economics' that is more interested in maintaining public services than in growth for growth's sake.

Given their high costs and high unemployment, whether or not they will succeed remains to be seen-- but the fact that an attempt is even being made to find a third way is poison to the more growth-oriented folks here at home. Hence the loud negative press.

Unemploiement in France is not really a problem.
Most of people are paid. I think more than say british workers.
Each time on french TV I see someone saying that we have too much unemploiement it's either a professor of a state owned Univeristy or a rich.
Someone that has never been jobless.
Me sometimes I'am jobless and I don't to change our social model. All working class don't want that this model change.
It's only people who are never jobless who wants to make a system more "efficient".

I second the motion to get him behind the subscription wall quickly!

Speaking of health care. Ezra, when you did your write-ups, did you come across information on which countries have the best outcomes for chronic diseases? I'd like to find out which systems work best for specific diseases and why.

To which I can only say "Gimme some of that stagnation, baby."
