Secondary Primary Post
As it turns out, I've got a few more things to say about the primary process. So here goes:
Brad Plumer thinks it'd be cool to implement Single Transferable Voting. I agree from a candidate selection perspective -- Brad has a few arguments to this effect -- and also from a fun perspective. Show me the Deaniac who won't feel raw pleasure in ranking Dean over Clark over Edwards over Kerry over Sharpton over Lieberman! Political junkies will enjoy having data about whom Hillary voters considered their second choice, and reading all the ranked endorsements that'll come out. The only disadvantage of STV is that it takes a little while to explain. But it's all fun fun fun after that.
Of course, the joy of STV can only happen in primaries and not in caucuses*, which raises** the question of what to do with the caucuses. I used to be strongly anti-caucus for electability reasons -- I'd like to make the primaries as general-election-like as possible, so as to confer any structural advantages on the candidate who had those advantages in the general election. But in researching the previous post, I read something that brought up the potential advantages of caucusing -- it helps you identify enthusiastic Democrats who really like a candidate, have an upbeat face-to-face chat with them, and bring them into the party structure as volunteers or contributors. So now I'm only mildly anti-caucus.
Unlike Brad, I think it's essential that the people and not the party bosses make the decisions. One of my complaints about the current system is that it allows a candidate to get a big boost out of doing favors for local politicians who then use their clout to help that candidate, rather than by being good or even electable. This is one of the reasons I like having a bunch of states go at the beginning instead of just a few -- you can't do special favors for the whole country. A boss-run system would make the current problem bigger.
*[Update:] Hmm, maybe you could use STV in caucuses. It'd be weird though.
**Please don't cause pain to philosophers -- use 'raises' in this context, not 'begs.'

Interesting point on caucuses! Another possible method, and a much simpler one at that, would be approval voting, where voters simply list *all* the candidates they want to vote for, without ranking. (So you could just write down "Dean, Clark, Edwards" or "Lieberman, Kucinich, Dean," etc.) I wish I could dig up the study on this, but computer simulations have shown that approval voting gets you the Condorcet winner (the candidate who would beat all other candidates one-on-one) about as often as STV does.

While I like the STV scheme well enough, the current systems confuse enough people as it is... make it any more complicated and the already huge problem of voter apathy seems to loom even larger.

I like STV better than approval, because it seems like you'd get less strategic voting with STV. Do you know if this is right?
Also, rankings=fun.

I'm sure we all know that there is no perfect voting system. Arrow, et al. So the question is not what system is better or right, as if on a moral or ideal level, but what you desire as a result and what creates the most incentives for that (like Neil was discussing with caucuses being structurally wrong).
STV really helps extremists, and while it leads to the moderate probably winning anyway, the extremist will have a strong popular base it knows it can appeal to. I find this an undesirable result.
As a structural-centrist, I like Plumer's suggestion, called Approval Voting. Peopl can express all the preferences they want, but the guy who wins will be the person most of the country can tolerate, a charismatic centrist.
Of course, all these systems can encourage strategems and lying about your preferences in voting. I don't know how much that should be factored in.

San Francisco and (I believe) Oakland have implemented STV for their city elections.
I think there's a chance that we could get this adopted for primaries in California, but it would help if (for example) LA were to adopt it for municipal elections first, just to get people more used to the idea.
British Columbia had a referendum on this issue in their election two weeks ago; a majority of voters supported it but it still failed under their technical provisions (60% majority provincewide plus a majority in 60% of parliamentary ridings; it met the latter qualification but not the former).
