Onward Blogging Soldier
Phil Carter, of Intel Dump, has been moved from the ready reserves and into the 101st Airborn, with orders to deploy in three weeks.
Wow.
Around the blogs, much is made of the 101st Fighting Keyboardists, and some of us are quite fond of demanding that war supporters enlist (a line of logic I find to be garbage, for all the reasons stated here, here, here, and here). Phil Carter has been a thoughtful, often critical, supporter of the war, a position, given his vulnerable status in the reserves, that took no small measure of bravery.
He also, along with Paul Glastris, penned a much discussed piece advocating a universal draft (at least if America wanted to continue as a superpower), that I criticized at length. Shortly thereafter, Phil wrote me a considered response and suggested we get lunch when I moved to LA. I regret never making the date. But that's okay. When he returns, I'll buy.
Good luck Phil. And be careful. There's a meal in it for you.

Update: I posted an UN-Instapundit backslapping comment.
Philip Carter, apparently a reservist, has been called to active duty. This is one of the few pro-war vets that I respect because he sincerely cares about the plight of the American soldier no matter the many giddy and optimistic pronouncements declared by the Bush Administration. Of course, I'm sure that his criticism of the war has nothing to do with his being called up and probably being sent to the Russian Front front lines. Who would imply that the Bush administration is mean-spirited and vengeful? Nothing to do at all I'm sure.

Update: I added this low key comment to his site. There's a bit of contrast with the boosters. I don't think it would be banned. Afterall, we kinda know Philip Carter isn't a pussy.
First, watch your back.
Second, I do not congratulate you because I do not think you'll be murdering Iraqis for a good cause. For the record, I wouldn't wish a German soldier good luck in Poland or France, either.
Third, I have the greatest respect for your courage. Here's somebody who walks the walk and talks the talk. You're smart enough to be a conscientious objector, or even to make some other nuanced claim, but you didn't. In a fair world, the Patrick Ruffinis and Instapundits and Pejmanpundits would go in your place...
Four: I have to say this out loud: Do you think your critiques against the war led to you being called up?

Update: Apparently he is a pussy because he did delete my posts. Ah well. My contrary words must be louder than bombs. I guess he'll find out. He also claims it was just the skill sets, sir. Hokay. Well, good luck there Captain America

Well, if I had to guess I think he probably took exception to statement numero dos up there. Just a thought...

I stand by what I said. Should I have tried something more euphemistic or Data-like? "I strongly disapprove of your waste extraction of insurgents in the Iraqi conflict in that it hints at war crime activity good sir..."
No, you should call murder for what it is. It's unethical and evil to murder peoplefor their stuff, even nice juicy tasty crack like oil. While I have made great pains to honor Mr. Carter's courage (oh to see the Bush twins or the Instapundit or Pejman in their mandatory dessert fatigues...), it simply isn't honorable to murder people who are defending their homes in order to prop up some makeshift puppet government that we've installed. Did you see that excuse for an Iraqi leader that we led around by the neck last weekend? Good lord. And like our own incompetent president he had hard time reading his GOP talking points convincely...what Iraqi would believe that the transparent puppet represents their interests...
I also don't think serving your country--Phil's phrase--makes any sense. If it means massacring people for oil the only intellectuallyl responsible thing to do is put down your weapon. I wish Carter had read and remembered Heinlein's quote: "Love your country but never trust your government."
This current corrupt crew simply doesn't deserve Carter's honor, loyalty or blood, which he will very likely have to pay with...No one should have to be the last person to die for a mistake or a sadly immature notion of what real patriotism means...

Good for him. Walking the talk.
I disagree with you that if they talk about it they shouldn't have to go. I think it is important that the people who push the agenda support it with their lives also. People are in the armed forces not to fight just any fight. They signed up to get an education, see the world and defend the United States. If you feel that this is imperative to the defense of the US, you should be there if you are able. Would you be morally right to not sign up if there was an actual attack on the US by another Soveriegn nation?
These people signed up and agreed to do this and follow our civilian appointed leaders. Do you think that these politicians would have approved of the war if only 20% of the people wanted us to go? The 101st Keyboarders parroted the lies and propaganda. They helped shape public opinion. Those people should go if they believe it. This is not the same as saying "love it, or leave." This is saying, put those people who believe in this out there. Let the people who want to get out of the service get out. Get out of the National Guard. They signed up for weekend duty to help out in a true national crisis. Here they are getting their lives totally disrupted.
Your comparison in other articles to supporting the war with supporting education is a straw man. I can support education adequately by voting for school bonds, addressing school boards about issues, campaining for educational issues all without being a teacher. If I encourage other people to be a teacher, I am not usually sending them into dangerous situations (contrary to popular beliefs.) I am not condemning other people to uprooting their lives to give up their jobs and take a teaching job with a possiblity of lower pay than the job they had. If I don't take a job with the Peace Core, I don't force someone else to do a job that includes the possiblity of killing innocent people.
