Redesign

So things should be looking a little different round these parts. If they're not, hit reload. The amazing, wonderful, phenomenal, and brilliant Shakespeare's Sister has been helping me with the redesign (read: she did it, and I had editorial input) and here's the result. We've got some color, we've got a tagline (the winner of a contest I had back in my Pandagon days), and we've got a third column.

Why a third column, you ask?

In order to sate this site's unending appetite for content, I read an enormous amount of news, blogs, op-eds, and think-tank reports in the course of a day. And, during my online travels, I find a lot of interesting, well-written, edifying stuff that I don't have anything to say about and thus can't build a post around. The choice then becomes taking up space with a throwaway "check 'er out" or ignoring an article of legitimate interest. Since I don't like to fill the page with pointers, most of it gets ignored. The third column should end all that. What we've got there is a Miniblog. When I find interesting pieces that I don't have much to say about, I'll pop 'em in there with a quick comment. You can then check out anything that seems interesting.

So...how's it look? Any problems?

Update: Mozilla and IE seem okay, Safari's giving intermittent problems. It's almost as if it's trying to show the new design and the old design at the same time. Anyone know why this would be happening?

If you think your browser may be screwing it up, but aren't sure, this is what it should look like...

Update 2: And why isn't the banner showing up on archive pages? Sigh...

Doesn't look right. Using Safari with 10.3.9

Wow. Before I reloaded, I thought you had some major issues. Now that I've reloaded, it is looking nice.

3-columns is the future.

I've thought about adding a fourth.

Tried again with Mozilla browser. Now it works.

Ezra -- Nice! It looks fine in Firefox. Certainly better than the clownish New York Times redesign they're springing on us.

Might want to go for bigger fonts for your post titles though.

I'm not seeing ezralogo6.jpg on Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0 (yeah, yeah, I need to update. This laptop is the only computer I've missed, I think.)

Also, there's a noticable lag in page loading when it hits furl javascript, but that may just be me and this ancient steam powered , coal fired computer. If it gets too annoying I'll just adblock it.

Lastly, I'll second the call for a slightly larger font on the post titles. Overall, it looks good.

I'm in Safari, and I'm seeing the third column badly smooshed into the top on the front page, and more neatly placed under the top on this page, though some of the text runs under the right-hand column. (these things are hard to describe, sorry)

well, at 11:44, the third column is completely gone in Firefox 1.0.3.

Looks damned smashing in the test though. :)

In Firefox 1.0.3, the header graphic is partially overlapped by the right-hand column, and the left-hand column seems to be gone. It doesn't look like the test (which looks very handsome indeed).

I'm in Safari and getting the same results as my lycanthrope colleague above, although it's both left and right columns.

Posted by: Ginger Yellow | May 5, 2005 5:26:50 AM

Using Firefox--there is overlap among the various elements when it first loads, but after I hit reload the page looks right. Would be nice if it was properly formatted the first time, but at least it's possible to get it to behave properly.

I use Konqueror, a SUSE LINUX browser, most of the time. Seems great!

Posted by: Robert Zimmerman | May 5, 2005 7:46:54 AM

On Opera 8.0 the header's all messed up, and the left column is smushed into the top.

I ran the page through the W3C validator (http://validator.w3.org/) page, and, well, the results are not pretty. But, they should point out where to start on the formatting problems.

I seem to have the same problem as Andrew, the graphic is covering up your miniblog (which is a smashing idea, BTW). Also, that miniblog isn't a column, it's a header just under the graphic.

Nice pic, where is it from?

Oh, and I'm using firefox 1.0.3 at my work PC.

I like your new design alot. It's clean and I like the fact that you dumped the fluid main index.

Posted by: Roxanne | May 5, 2005 8:49:54 AM

I'm on IE, and it's all screwy -- third column is squished up at the top.

Posted by: LizardBreath | May 5, 2005 9:58:36 AM

Safari is screwy still too. Smushed at the top. Let me try Firefox.

Posted by: Abby | May 5, 2005 10:31:28 AM

Why does the test look fine in Safari but not the real thing?

Posted by: space | May 5, 2005 10:32:13 AM

A big improvement, it looks great. Since I should nitpick to justify leaving a comment, I think the line spaceing should be smaller in the miniblog -- why is it more spaced out than the regular blog?

Posted by: Sean | May 5, 2005 11:02:32 AM

Sean, good point, I'll look into that

Posted by: Ezra | May 5, 2005 11:03:46 AM

Firefox isn't entirely in the clear, either. I can barely see the "Ezra Klein" at the top, I see no tagline anywhere, and the "miniblog" column at left looks awful--monospaced "typewriter" font instead of the sans-serif look of the other two columns. Go back to the old way, please!
