Ordinary Rendition
Next time Bush declares his confidence in our rejection of rendition, I wouldn't, uh, believe him. Sweden's released a report detailing an America rendition done on their territory, which, had it been done by Swedish police, would've been illegal. Indeed, the American use of police powers on Swedish ground is illegal, and the report noted that prosecution of the Americans involved is a possibility.
I want to say this once and I want to say it clearly: Our. Country. Tortures. We don't have a few loose cannons wielding bull whips and tasers, we have a government whose official policy is the encouragement of extraordinary rendition, which is to say shipping our captured off to other countries for torture. Public protestations that we extract promises of humane treatment are simply insulting. If they were true, why do we need to send prisoners to other countries?
We torture. It is our fault. And our government means for it to happen.

Those Americans were not trained well. Seems to be the excuse for anything that comes out. They were ill trained, not trained at all. Mentally not all there. A former stateside guard. Always another asinine excuse. When will the rest of America see this God Awful Administration for what it is?

How could you hear of this and not be shamed by it as an American? The sad part is the army of accomplices who seek to excuse this behavoir has necessary or even useful in the war on terror. It's a failure on empirical grounds. It's a failure on moral grounds. It simply doesn't yield useful results. It degrades our country and fuels the forces we seek to defeat.

I'm old enough to remember way,way back. I know we have never been a perfect nation but, Lord knows we have tried at times. To see what is being done in our name breaks my heart. Worse, it's hard to believe so many agree with the current policies that include war crimes and torture. It seems that this administration has brought out the very worst of much of the population by encouraging ignorance to reign supreme and with pride. For those of us who never supported the war, the costs in lives, money and reputation don't justify any of it. Always before in crises we have managed to extricate ourselves, sometimes at the last minute. I'm beginning to wonder if we will be able to stop this steamroller from going forward. It sometimes seems as though we may have passed the point of no return. My greatest hope is some of you youngsters. I see lots of promise there.
As a side note, I find it refreshing to be able to respond on occasion. One-sided discussions get boring and I tune them out.
