Google Bomb Me

Is there anyway to Google bomb my own site? When you search me on Google you get, in order, Brad DeLong talking about me, Pandagon, and my original blogspot site. This site doesn't show up for pages, I haven't even gone far enough through to find it. So is there any way to change that, to make it so searching my name will find my current home on the internets? I don't really know how Google works, but I've heard about metatags or something. Anyway, help appreciated.

Update: The title was just a joke, though many thanks to those who actually did Google bomb me. Turns out Typepad was hiding the site from the google bots, and now, thanks to some intrepid html sleuths who helped out in comments, that's over with. You all rock.

You have to get people to link to you, with your name as the link. I'm sure when your co-bloggers read this they'll help you out. If you don't want to wait, you could probably do it yourself, by posting a lot of comments on other people's blogs. In any event it would take a few weeks.

Reminds me of the fun I have trying to find government sites ; they're overrun by business and scam listings. A couple of links and I was back tho.

All right--I did it. Now can I get a link under the category "sorry ass lurkers?" :)

Ezra

I'm surprised it shows up at all. You've got a 'robots' metatag in your source code that specifies noindex. You also have nofollow, but I'm not quite certain what that does. The noindex tag tells google and other search engines to not index your site. Remove the noindex tag and it should start showing up on google soon. It might take a while for the googlebot to make its way around again -- not sure how often google updates a given page.

Once you do that, your site should show up near the top because you have 'Ezra Klein' as your title. If you want to get crazy, add another metatag with content="Ezra Klein" somewhere in the html header.

Mike -- you da man.

Posted by: Ezra | May 1, 2005 11:53:47 PM

Oops. In my previous comment, I should've said to add a meta-tag with name="keywords" content="Ezra Klein". The tag should look like this:

[meta name="keywords" content="Ezra Klein" /]

Replace the square brackets with angle brackets.

Mike -- was that last backslash a typo or part of the code?

Posted by: Ezra | May 2, 2005 12:07:28 AM

The backslash was intentional. Be sure to leave a space between the closing quote of "Ezra Klein" and the backslash.

Posted by: W. | May 2, 2005 12:15:06 AM

I'd use the slash. When I posted that, I copied a meta tag from your source code, which had the trailing slash. I think it has something to do with how typepad implements their xml, but I could be wrong.

I did some digging, and it turns out the nofollow tells google to not analyze your links -- so they're not indexing your site and they're not counting any links you have to other sites in their formula. In other words, no googlebombs for you... I'd either remove the robots tag entirely or change it to "index, follow".

I just removed the wqhole thing. Looking into it, I found that when I declined Typepad publicity, they took me off all search engines. I reversed that and then manually took the code off each page of my site...hopefully, that fixes it. Thanks so much for your help...will I get the ranking I'd have had the site been on Google all along, or have the last few months been lost google time, so to speak?

Posted by: Ezra | May 2, 2005 12:21:23 AM

I can't say for certain, but I would think you'd be near the top. Nobody knows exactly how Google calculates its rankings, but the algorithm uses meta keywords, prominence of the searched text as well as links from other sites. You already have Ezra Klein in your title, which is the most prominent spot in the html document for it to appear. You're also on plenty of other people's blogrolls, so that will help get your ranking up. Add in the metatags, and you'll probably be the #1 Ezra Klein in no time flat. Or at least top ten.

Slogan suggestion: "Ezra Klein: Your #1 Site For Ezra Klein"

Posted by: Daniel A. Munz | May 2, 2005 12:56:49 AM

Awesome

Posted by: Ezra | May 2, 2005 12:57:49 AM

I searched for your name on Yahoo, and this site was the fourth result. Ahead of it, in order, were the main page for ezrak.blogspot.com, a specific post within ezrak.blogspot.com, and a Pandagon post. On Google though, this site isn't anywhere near the top, as you know.

Attend the MIT Time Travelers' Convention this weekend, hitch a ride back to 1999, and start blogging back then under an assumed name...

That's all I can suggest.

Ezra,

I've been on Typepad for over a year, so I have a couple of question based on my noodling around with the templates.

Is this the code you removed?

MTBlogIfPrivate
meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" /
/MTBlogIfPrivate

There's a place in the "Configure" tab called "Publicity and Feeds" where you can opt for your blog to be public or private. You can opt for blo.gs and weblogs.com to be pinged separately. If you have "no" checked in the option to make your blog public, then Google and other robots won't index your site. OK, so you want to check "no" to public blog because you don't like this:

"Public means that your weblog will appear on TypePad's Recently Updated list and directories, and anyone will be able to read your weblog. Marking your weblog as public is a great way to increase your site's traffic and gives more people the opportunity to find your weblog. If you do not want the general public to know about your weblog, select "no"." Right?

If that's the case, then you created an advanced template with the IfPrivate code removed. Is this right? Because if you didn't create an Advanced template and switch your site to this edited, advance template, then you didn't actually do anything.

Not that I understand why you object to being on Typepad's updated list.

Just checked google, and you're the first one on the list now.

Not quite understanding how to google bomb

Posted by: Julianna | Jan 21, 2006 9:07:40 PM

google bombing is motly a plan of well organized linking. Linking your website in strategic places with specific content on those pages. Do alot of linking and writing. Writing about your desired search terms helps. Example. If I wanted the top spot when someone searched for the best graphic designer then I would link to those terms. Google bombig has really turned into a good thing. Turns out the searches provided from google bombings are better and have more relevant content than searches we had before. I find there is alot better content available at the first one or two pages of a google search than there used to be. Another reverse tactic is to linking your site backwards pr6.com. Good luck, and be creative! - the best graphic designer

I could use some help getting a link to a guide to installing synthetic lawns that I put together. http://www.pr6.com/synthetic/synthetic-lawn-step-one.html is the direct url to the site. I've got some optomization to work out yet but I'd appreciate posting my link it that I can get.

Cheers!
