George Allen
Ever since the National Journals Insiders Poll -- a poll of various Washington bigwigs, heavyweights, and wise men -- reported that George Allen is the favored 2008 nominee of the Republican establishment, I've been trying to get a feel for what he's about. This isn't, by the way, the first time I've heard of him. A buddy of mine who's a pretty astute political observer has been talking up his danger for a few months now, arguing that he's a more genial, more authentic, and smarter incarnation of the Bush formula.
So we've got some buzz. So who is George Allen? Shakespeare's Sister did some spadework here, finding that the guy's got a hard conservative voting record, which is true. But he's a bit more interesting than that. Allen grew up in Palos Verdes, California, until his father moved to Virginia to coach the Washington Redskins. In 1982, he won a seat in the VA House of Delegates, in 1991 he won a seat in Congress, and in 1993 he got himself elected Governor, mainly by uniting the state's religious conservatives behind him. You see, then, why he's well cut out for Republican national politics.
His term as governor went smoothly, and he gained a reputation as a genial, optimistic guy with a habit of veering into hard conservative rhetoric. At the 1996 state convention, he said, "My friends -- and I say this figuratively -- let's enjoy knocking their soft teeth down their whining throats." Even so, he left office with 68% job approval.
After he was termed out of the governor's office -- VA only allows governors a single term -- he ran against Charles Robb for Senate. Robb had a fair amount of scandal following him and had just barely defeated Oliver North in 1994. Allen beat him pretty easily, 52%-48%. Once in the Senate, he became a leader on high tech issues, fighting to extend the ban on internet taxes, and then (and now) arguing to make it permanent. In 2002, he was picked to succeed Frist as head of the NRSC, and shortly thereafter he was a prime mover in taking down Lott and installing his predecessor as majority leader.
He's up for reelection in 2006, and term-limited governor and oft-mentioned Democratic presidential candidate Mark Warner is thinking of challenging him. Polls show the men about 4% apart, and a win would do much to help either one's profile. If Warner decides to skip a tough race and try and go right for the presidency, however, Allen will keep the seat and you'll find two former governors of Virginia gunning for the White House.
So what've we got? Allen's a genial guy with good people skills, an ability to appease the Religious Right, the capacity to raise cash from high tech funds (which probably means a good understanding of what the internet means and how to use it), a lot of goodwill from his work at the NRSC, and a ton of insider buzz. I watched him on MTP this morning and he was profoundly unimpressive -- Russert's questions regularly threw him off balance, his command of the issues seemed weak, and he made a major gaffe, suggesting that old folks sell their homes so they've more money for retirement and not as much landscaping to take care of. Oops.
So watch Allen closely, but I wouldn't get too excited. The guy's got neither George Bush's macho charisma nor Bill Clinton's empathic abilities; he comes off like a regular guy, but not necessarily in an impressive way.

Allen also has some racist history, as he proudly declared April as "Confederate History and Heritage Month" during his tenure as Governor and is known to have a Confederate Flag in his living room. There was also a story about a vintage era noose and some noise he made against MLK and the NAACP.
Allen is by far my least favorite Senator in the GOP - the only upside about him is that whenever he lies he gets this stupid smirk on his face, so you can easily tell when he's either making things up or deliberately obfuscating his positions.

I lived across the street from George Allen as a kid, here in Albemarle County, just outside of Charlottesville, VA. Allen is an idiot. He's a smirking, vapid chimp.
He is -- literally -- all hat and no cattle, as he can often be seen in snakeskin cowboy boots and a big cowboy hat. He has no cattle, never has. He's from LA. Don't nobody in Albemarle wear cowboy boots or cowboy hats. He looks like a damned fool in those duds.
The guy walks around with a stupid grin plastered on his face at all times. His speaking style could be described, at best, as ingratiating.
My second substantive political thought after losing the election last November was that we must take out George Allen. I'm still working on that. Holla if you ever want to know more about the guy.

He seems to have a terminal case of the stupids to me. Dodd made him look like a fool today.

Bush doesn't have any macho charisma, just an affected attitude that seems to play well on TV. And while gaffes, issue weakness, and not knowing how to handle interviewer questions should be enough to keep any candidate out of the White House, they haven't hurt Shrub any. So don't be too quick to give Allen the brush-off.

Watching Allen on MTP this morning only made me certain that he was simply another GOP sheep - maybe a cloned one at that. His repeated refusal to answer Russert's questions on social security - about whether he would support a Social Security fix that didn't include Private Accounts - made it pretty obvious he's incapable of independent thought.

Like yourself, Ezra, I'm an outsider who has been looking into Allen, and I don't know if I'd describe his win over Chuck Robb as "easy." Despite Robb's ethical baggage that should have killed him in '94--had the GOP not run Ollie North--he either put up a good fight or Allen isn't all he seems.
Adding it up, it looks like Allen was a popular and "successful" governor (keeping in mind in the mid-90s it was easier to do than now), in a conservative state where Democrats had been doing increasingly poorly in statewide elections and the presidential race broke decidely in his favor. His opponent was a tired incumbent whose peak years were in the 1980s when he was a popular governor, was mostly remembered for drug and sex scandals, had a major falling out with the leading black politico in the state (Douglas Wilder), hadn't accomplished much in Washington that kept him in the press and had become, at least on gay rights, notably liberal--Robb voted against Defense of Marriage, for example.
Finally, Allen had $10,073,000 on hand, spent just under ten million of it, while Robb had $6,128,000 and ended up about half a million in debt. Despite ALL this, AND a roughly double digit lead at the start of the campaign, Allen won by only four points.
While Allen should no doubt be taken seriously, especially now that he's the incumbent, I think we should consider carefully just how formidible he is. A Dubya without the bonhommie and Sam Brownback without the seriousness?

Fomer Lt Gov. Don Beyer, who Allen beat for Gov. in 1997, will run against Allen in 2006.
http://www.beyerforsenate.org/blog/
It's an uphill race for Beyer, but he and the state party have learned a lot since 1997 and I think he can win. Much will depend on how the 2005 Governor's race goes. If Democrats win the state house and win back a few seats in the House of Delegates, that will be a great indicator for 2006.

Allen is totally useless.....never deviates by a millimeter from the R leadership agenda.
Posted by: walden | May 2, 2005 10:20:37 AM
Another Bush comparision - Allen isn't afraid to campaign down and dirty. His congressional campaign was incredibly mean and sleazy.
His screwups as governor - overbuilding prison space / totally screwing up Department of Transportation - didn't come to light until after leaving the office - thus the high approval ratings at the time.
I fear that Don Beyer doesn't stand a chance in hell of beating him in '06 much as I'd like to see him fall. Geez - Beyer lost to Jim Gilmore and you never saw anyone as dumb as Gilmore.
Frankly, I'm looking forward to a repub primary that pits Allen against Jeb - should be delightfully dirty and viscious...thekeez

Another thing Allen did that makes him a darling to the Gops is his "No Car Tax" demagoguing. He succeeded in crippling the state's economy. So we elected a Democrat to try and put things back together until the next Republican shows up to loot things again.
We went to one-party rule here a while back. Interestingly, the result was that some GOP members started to turn into something resembling Democrats, putting the brakes on some of the more idiotic proposals. It's as if, with no grownups around, the older adolescents started to take on their roles.

Nope, that was his attorney general, Jim Gilmore, who succeeded Allen as governor.
Allen got nailed in his race for Congress against Kay Slaughter for faking a photo of her burning a flag. It was long ago that Google's got nothin', but I certainly remember it. He's got some karma coming his way. We might have to help it along a little, though. :)

Whoops. Those guys must be blurring into each other again. I think that means they're about to morph.
And here I had just about managed to forget Gilmore. Well. I guess remembering him beats being doomed to repeat him.

Allen is "icky" When he runs for reelection in 06 everyone should attend his rallies with a noose around their necks. He thinks he can get away from that noose, but he can't

Oohhhh this is awesome. I read all the blogs on George Allen and they're mostly all right. The one that really hits it on the nail is Allen's dirtiness when he runs. He'll have groups do his dirty work and claim he knows nothing about it. In 1993 he tried to portray fomer Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, his oppenent for governor, as a lesbian. If I was going to give his next oppenent any advice about him, it would be DON'T UNDERESTIMATE him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He's really quite stupid, and says,"Ahhh shucks," all the time, and yes his stupid ass grin is sickening too.
When he ran in 1993 he used a lot of Negative Clinton comparisons. Clinton doesnt' go over well south of Fairfax County. So I GUARANTEE if Allen becomes the next candidate for PRez in 2008 he'd love nothing more than to run against Hillary "Bottom Hands" Clinton.
It's beyond me why the son-of-a-bitch was popular here in Virginia. Let me tell you something though, beyond his stupid Ass Grin, there's a RELENTLESS, mean man who has quite a following of people that would wipe his butt if he asked them to. Folks this has been very theraputic for me to vent on him, cause he's at the top of my scum of the earth list!! Later.

Pat Robertson endorsed Allen on This Week (the same one where he said the Federal Judiciary was a greater threat to the country than Al Qaeda). The following week, Mary Matalin went out of her way to talk him up to Tim Russert. These two endorsements, and the National Journal poll, make it clear that the GOP will be pushing hard for Allen to be the nominee. He'll have to beat Giuliani and/or McCain after they beat him in New Hampshire. Allen will run the same scumbag Rove campaign that killed McCain's South Carolina chances in 2000, while bludgeoning Dobson's moronic herd with attacks on Giuliani's divorces, pro-choice stance, etc.
George Allen is the GOP's last, best hope to preserve the status quo. Every dumb smirk, every 'jes folks chuckle, every goddamn football reference (go to his website bio page (http://allen.senate.gov/?c=senbio) and look at his family photo--the moron is actually holding a football in it) cements him as the perfect model of Reagan/Bush imbecility the GOP needs to win the red states again.
We need to stop him now, with ten times the fervor and tenacity that the "Stop Hillary" crowd is exhibiting. If not, much as I hate to say it, George Allen will beat Hillary in every single red state Bush won. It will be "the dumb good 'ol boy vs. the Northeastern liberal" once again.
Beat him in the Senate in 2006. Make it an ugly, damaging campaign. We need the dirt on this moron to get out sooner rather than later. Take the gloves off. Learn from the last election.
Let's humiliate this asshole.
As Atwater used to say, rip the bark off him.

George Allen is a real piece of work, as was his come-from-behind victory in the 1993 governor's race. if i remember correctly, shortly before the election a psychiatrist named William Gray came forward and claimed that Mary Sue Terry was a lesbian and he had "secret files" to prove it. who was Gray? at the time he was under investigation for taking sexual advantage of young male patients. he had, in fact, lost his medical license in California previously for this very thing. Mary Sue Terry, attorney general at the time, was livid that there was no interstate communication between medical boards and that Gray was allowed to set up shop in Virginia. hence, Gray had a *revenge* motive. in any case, Allen - of course - was victorious and Gray moved to the Philippines soonafter. do you think it worthwhile information that Allen's political star was tied to the testimony of a vengeful pederast? i think it could be.

George Allen has a racist past that has not been fully explored. In addition to Confederate flags as living room decor and the noose in his law office, there was racist graffiti he spraypainted on the walls of Palos Verdes High School back in 1970 to stir up animosity toward blacks. Racism was his hobby back then. I was a classmate and remember the incident well.

George Allen is a racist, misogynistic, self-hating Jew, who despises blacks, minorities, women, and gays. This can all be overwhelmingly proven by facts that are abundantly covered all over the internet, television, and in the printed media.
He is all the more dangerous because as a Jew he should know better. But then again, Adolph Hitler was exactly like him.
If the American people in Virginia elect this monster, then it is an indication that we as a nation have learned nothing from 200 years of fighting racist, misogynistic, sexist, megalomaniacs like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Pinochet, etc in countless wars that have killed tens of millions of Americans.
A victory for George Allen in Virginia, the heartland of the United States, would officially mean the end of America as we know it, and the open beginning of a tyrannical, elitist, oppressive, despotism that our Founding Fathers ran from Europe in order to flee.
In other words, America as we know it, and what it stands for, will officially be defunct and finished.
