What a Tool

I'm no Horowitz fan, but holy hell, I didn't think the guy was this intellectually dishonest. Challenging someone to a written debate, editing their answers down, and then publishing the exchange with comments that you wish your opponent had participated more fully -- when he did and you cut it! -- is a rarely realized peak of argumentative weakness. I guess this is just one more of Horowitz's never-ending contradictions -- to reach this highest point of dishonesty he had to sink lower than we ever thought he could. Why Berube wastes his time on this guy I'll never know.

Why Berube wastes his time on this guy I'll never know.

Nor will I, but as a reader I'm glad he wasted his time. Berube could publish his Horowitz exchanges complete with blog comments, slap on a $15 price tag, and I'd buy it.

It's too bad Horowitz doesn't have a real pundit career (publishing junkmail pamphlets about George Soros doesn't count), because this little fraud would totally ruin it.

Sorry, I just don't think a post about yet another fundamentally dishonest, influential "conservative" is complete without a right-wing troll espousing moral relativism. I mean, a few days ago over at Yglesias, they had to bring up the Weather Underground. Seriously.

Anyway, as I look at it again, that line of Ezra's really belongs in a show tune. "Lower than we ever thought he could! D. Ho!"

In Berube's wrap up of the Horowitz affair (not the linked article but the next later in http://www.michaelberube.com/index.php/weblog/, with link http://www.michaelberube.com/index.php/weblog/frontpage_post_mortem/), he says that they apologized but wished he had contacted them before going off on them, to which Berube replies, I wish you had contacted me before using me as an emblem of leftist intellectual laziness because you did not publish my lengthy replies.

He also says that having a blog gets results: when he used to write people letters, the polite or quizzical ones got replies 'I smeared you, so what' while the angry ones resulted in dime-store psychologizing (why are you so angry?). But blogging: that works.
