Transitional Popes
If I were the new Pope, I'd be feeling a bit weird right now. In fact, not only now; I'd be downright nervous whenever someone glanced at their watch in my presence. What's the rush? With all the commentary focusing on Ratzinger's status as a transitional (read: likely to die soon) Pope, he's got to be feeling the reality of mortality pretty acutely. You'd think this transitional idea would be something the Cardinals could keep to themselves, but apparently not. Instead, Ratzinger emerged Pope amid ecstatic cries of "He's so old!" and "I bet his health is failing" and, the current crowd favorite, "the real question is who'll be the next Pope when he dies, which will be soon?"
Odd folk, these Catholics are. They take all the fun out of promotion.

Let us only hope it's true. All I see in him are the thousands of babies and mothers who will suffer. No condoms means aids and mothers having too many children who die young. I don't believe this is what God had planned for his children.

You know what this reminds me of:
when the Kremlin couldn't decide to go w/the reformers or the hardliners in the early 80s, so they came across a compromise: choose Cherneko, a hard liner, who was going to die soon.
OK, one incredibly ignorant opinion, but I'd throw that out there. The Catholic Church didn't choose someone from the 3rd World as the new pope and chose someone who appears to be ill-suited to appeal to some in the West.

And yes, there's a post-Brezhnev feel about it.
That said, the average lifespan of a pope after being elected is around a decade. Pope John XXIII was elected as a 'well, he'll die soon' pope, to allow the future Paul VI to become a cardinal. It's just that we had a fifteen-year pope, then a 30-day pope, then a 26-year pope, which skews things a bit.

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was supposed to be an interim pope as well, but we came to know him as John XXIII.

All I know is that even with Benedict being 78, there's no reason he has to die tomorrow, or next month, or indeed, next decade. Me, I'm looking forward to the centenary of Pope Benedict XVI, which will roll around in May of 2027...

After reading the Wikipedia entry on Ratzy, I, too, can't wait for him to die.
Well, unless he turns off people from religion and they start thinking by themselves, but there's little chances of that happening too soon, and he can do lots of damage in the meantime, transitional or not.

Transitional, schmanzitional.
Ratzinger is one of (if not the most important of) the hardliners who took over the Vatican with JP2. Anyone who thinks he's just there to hold the fort before handing over to some nice, consensual, middle-of-the-road possibly 3rd world pope, believes in miracles.
The speed with which he was elected reflects the fact that JP2 named most of the cardinals in the conclave, and he named conservatives.
The media narrative (the other possible candidates, transition) is spin.
Meanwhile the AIDS epidemic will go on killing Africans and, increasingly, Asians.

it doesnt matter according to bible in revelation ch 17 the woman that rides the beast is the catholic church and the beast is rome. the reason for this pope being old well it doesnt matter only god knows but in the word in revelation it says that the world shall marvel over the beast whose deadly wound is healed. In 1929 the roman empire was revived after having ruled from 538ad to 1798ad. There has been 6 popes since 1929 and ratzinger is the 7th. The bible says 5 kings are fallen, and one is and another is to come and the seventh must rule for a short space and the eighth is of the seventh. The eighth is the devil himself incarnated into the body of this pope. A well known jesuit priest malachi martin wrote in wind swept house a ceremony that has taken place in the vatican called the enthronement of the fallen angel lucifer. The devil is using the vatican to set up global dominion that rome has already broken the entire world into 10 regions like it says in the bible. The papacy is the most wicked rulers throughout history killing innocent christians because we wont worship their idols and religous dogma’s. that golden cup that is used during mass is supposed to be their holiest instrument.
