Tom Gone Crazy!
Via Digby, I see Tom DeLay is proving my argument from yesterday, namely, that the further Terry gets from the headlines, the more ludicrous become Tom's attempts to keep her under the cameras. Her exit, after all, means the reentrance of his scandals. So on the 18th, Tom argued that she was as "alive as your or I", that she was not "being kept alive", and promised that, on Palm Sunday weekend, she would not be forsaken. Pretty good, huh? Well on the 19th, he accused the Supreme Court, who didn't want to hear the case, of perpetrating a "moral and legal tragedy" and told them they owe it "to the dignity of human life" to explain their decision. Pretty nutty, huh? On the third day of Terry-saving, the 20th, DeLay stumbled in from the bar to explain that "Terry Schiavo is not brain-dead; she talks and she laughs, and she expresses happiness and discomfort" and that "it won't take a miracle to help Terry Schiavo".
So in three days, he went from concerned, to outraged, all the way to issuing press releases from a land entirely of his imagination. But Terry was still slipping from the headlines! How dare she!? So here's Tom on the 21st:
One thing that God has brought to us is Terri Schiavo, to help elevate the visibility of what is going on in America," Mr. DeLay told a conference organized by the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group. A recording of the event was provided by the advocacy organization Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
"This is exactly the issue that is going on in America, of attacks against the conservative movement, against me and against many others," Mr. DeLay said.
Mr. DeLay complained that "the other side" had figured out how "to defeat the conservative movement," by waging personal attacks, linking with liberal organizations and persuading the national news media to report the story. He charged that "the whole syndicate" was "a huge nationwide concerted effort to destroy everything we believe in."
In three little paragraphs, Tom has called the woman with a liquified cerebral cortex a gift from God, compared her situation to his own, and used her to uncover a vast left-wing conspiracy determined to topple Tom DeLay and the values of America conservatism. Look behind you kids. Yeah, that's right, wave to the shark. Yeah, keep watching the shark. Those men taking Uncle Tom away are doing it for his own good, but he wouldn't want you to watch.

To DeLay: Get off the fucking cross. Somebody needs the wood.

It seems to me that those who support Ms. Schiavo's right to autonomy need a way to show support. As someone who doesn't currently have a living will, but who is anxious to sign the dotted line now I have a proposal:
Get people who have a living will or intend to get one (thanks to the GOP's clearly stated intention to make it much more difficult for us to avoid being treat like human faux grois) to send copies of theirs to Delay's congressional office. Perhaps a sort of stand in for a living could be provided (to avoid privacy concerns) and a form cover letter explaining the right of Americans to die with dignity.
This would support Terry's wishes AND provide a test of whether the media would report a similar grass-roots outpouring that isn't abusing Christ's message for political gain.

I have a recommendation for all:
1. Get yourself a "Durable Power of Attorney for Medical Care".
2. Instead of naming a family member or trusted friend to make the life-or-death decision for you (should you end up in a persistent vegitative state, as Terri Schiavo has), name one of the following people:
a. President George W. Bush
b. Sen. Tom DeLay
c. Sen. Bill Frist
d. Sen. Rick Santorum
...or any other 'culture of life' parasite.
If it's ever needed, you'll just be a souless husk of a body, so you won't care what decision they'll make; but it'll put them on the spot.
Imagine the looks on their faces if they were to receive thousands of copies from folks all over the US who have put the decision in their slimy hands -- as they have visions of warehouses of liquifying PVS bodies kept alive forever at gummint expense because these fuckers don't dare pull the plug on anyone or risk their precious 'base'...

Ezra, anything to say about this very annoying post from Noam Scheiber? That the Repubs are "losing the battle, but winning the war" with this Schiavo business? I don't think his comparison to the Iraq war/UN issues is anything close to being on the money.
http://tnr.com/etc.mhtml?pid=2606
Plus, in the last post he did just last evening, he speculated that Delay's involvement with Schiavo would only serve to bring his ethics issues into the spotlight--and then he posts the next afternoon about how the Republicans are going to benefit from this after all!

You know what would be awesome is if he really believed this shit and so continues further and further off the deepend until even his closest associates just stare at him slack jawed.
Posted by: Boronx | Mar 22, 2005 2:02:44 PM
What I'm wondering is what favour the repubs are about to ask their fundie friends. They wouldn't throw them a bone and bring them back in the spotlight for nothing.

Michael Schiavo has invited President Bush to meet his wife. I imagine he would be willing to extend the invitation to Delay.
Why isn't his offer and Bush's refusal getting more play? This is fantastic drama and really shows the difference in character between Bush and a human being.

MFA, that's an interesting tactic. However, conflicts of interest rules regarding the power of attorney may arise, voiding your designee (depending on the state)

Can we all say it together, "PROJECTION".

God, I'm laughing my ass off over this. I thought you were going to say that after the third day we could wrap him in a shroud, stick him in a cave and roll a boulder in front of it. But, nooooo, you kept on going into day four . . .
I think they're made a seriou error, and labeling judges who don't go along liberals, or Clinton appointees, is just going to compound it. Many, many more people are skeptical about how things work in Florida than in 2000. Judges who don't respond to these circus antics are going to look to most folks like the not-crazy ones . . .

"...Terry was still exiting the news! That bitch!"
First, the grammar doesn't make sense. Second, the vocabulary is in poor taste. Or, at least, it doesn't translate well in the format of a blog post.

I wonder what kind of "end-of-life" arrangements Tom Delay has? Is Mrs. Delay just itching to pull the plug? He obviously is operating on less than a full brain!

If Tom DeLay is saying Terri Schiavo is "as alive as you or I," the only possible response is "speak for yourself, asshole!"
