I'm Gross

Sir Singer writes:

I think I grew up fairly independent. I learned how to cook, clean, launder, etc., as a child, but most of my female friends who live on their own still have cleaner houses than me. They generally are more on their at-home shite than I am. Meanwhile, I’m a good cook, but a house that relied upon me for cleanliness would be a relatively sad site (just ask my roommates).

I'll second that, with a caveat. I'm a really good cook. Don't believe me? Ask my girlfriend, she can field questions in the comments. I just am -- it's a very weird, highly unexpected talent. Things I make turn out way better than they have any right to. Further, I love cooking, so it works out well. But I hate cleaning. Worse, I don't think it important. Not so much cleaning up clutter, I know I need to do that, but mopping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning mirrors, scrubbing sinks -- if I lived on my own, this stuff just wouldn't be done. Now, if someone tells me to do it and it's my share of the chores, I will, but I'll do it with the same sentiment I use when washing dishes before popping them in the dishwasher -- why!?

Now I don't know if this is a socialization thing, a me thing, or what, but I'll echo Matt. Any house relying on me to cook is fine, any house relying on me to clean will be quarantined within the year. My best guess is that it's a body thing: my stomach hurts if I don't feed it, nothing aches if I don't vacuum, and who cares if there's toothpaste in the sink?

Perhaps you are weighed down by the utter futility of existence; contemplating the everpresent clutter saps the very life from your limbs.

Or maybe it's a guy thing, I dunno.

It's a girl thing too: I love to cook, hate to clean. My first act on getting a Real Job was to hire a weekly cleaning service.

I think it's just that women are taught that only nasty sluts don't clean; guys are free to let the dust bunnies proliferate until Hazmat status is reached.

great post !!
I looked around my apartment & laughed after reading this.
It's a controled mess :)

I myself have a tendency to ignore the cleaning until my friends start threatening to call Environment Canada (something to do with the emerging civilisations in my sink, I guess)...

Call it the joys of living alone.

But I'm a great cook (too), so I guess it evens out.

I'm sure this will only "further" my rep as being a total anomally, but I'm like you. I do the cooking. My husband does ALL the other household chores. And I mean ALL.

Posted by: Roxanne | Mar 23, 2005 9:17:59 PM

Roxanne, ditto. I am a great cook, total useless slug in every other area. Mr. Shakes will attest. (Although he does leave beard clippings in my toothbrush, so it all comes out in the wash.)

Cleaning IS a socialization thing, it seems.

Living with your own dirt is easy unless you've been guilt-trained in childhood. Confronting the same level of disorder and neglected cleaning in someone else's house DOES produce disgust.

Living with others helps if some of them just insist on a certain level of cleanliness, and it is hard to refuse that.

I've rationalized it. When I'm expecting company I try to look at things the way I would entering someone else's house. If not expecting company, then I guess I feel that lack of compulsion to clean is clearly better than some phobia about cleanliness.

I've had guys come over and give me cleaning tips. I mean, I'd never notice the dust unless someone wrote a legible message in it. Or the wooly dust mammoths -- sometimes I might line them up against the wall but mostly I don't pay attention.. And I can't really get all that excited about dirty dishes, unless I can't find any clean ones. My fridge stays pretty clean, though, and I'm an extremely good cook (though I rarely bother). I like to do laundry. My favorite thing, though, is organizing stuff. All my drawers and closets are beautifully organized. I lot of stuff is, well, not actually in closets or drawers, but if it were, it would be neatly in its place. My lovely ex-wife is fanatical about dusting and vacuuming and scrubbing things, but her idea of cleaning the house involves shoving everything in the drawers and closets and leaning on them to get them closed. I still go over to her house and clean out her drawers and cabinets on Xmas and her birthday. When we lived together our house was beautiful and clean all the time, though. One thing re the housecleaning is chick stuff bullshit- I used to get kind of smug sometimes when I heard the straight girls at work complain about cleaning their houses while hubby sits on his fat ass drinking beer and watching TV. I'd think: y'all need a wife, is what you need. And then I'd get kind of embarrassed for being just like one of those guys.

I always think of my beloved aunt and uncle (he is 86 and living well in an upscale retirement community near Olympia, Washington; she passed away about ten years ago).

My uncle was always a tidy, neat, OMG-I-can't-stand-the-clutter sort of person. My aunt couldn't be bothered. So a long time ago (like the late 1950s) they figured out their best solution. My aunt did all of the cooking and grocery-list making. She was also in charge of keeping the kitchen clean.

My uncle did all the other cleaning. He scrubbed and puttered and neatened. They went grocery shopping together. She washed the dishes, but only if he sat at the kitchen table and read aloud to her while she washed.

My own very conventional parents thought this was very beatnik/bohemian, and definitely something up with which decent people should not put. But for my aunt and uncle, it worked just fine.

I learned, from them, to value what works.

I was pretty slovenly until I moved out of my parents' house. I just couldn't get into keeping things neat, living with packrats and a bunch of other slovenly children. Once I got into the world, I discovered that I need my messes to have right angles. So... messes tend to get cleaned up pretty quickly.

Funny about the cooking thing, too. No offense to my mom (or dad)- but they're not very good in the kitchen, but I'm spectacular in the kitchen. And humble. Very humble.

We've got a hybrid household -- I'm fairly neat but hate to clean, while my wife is a slob who loves to clean. So I straighten up after myself immediately (dishes in dishwasher, bed more or less made, cds/books back on shelf, milk back in the refrigerator as soon as I'm done with it), but on my own would go maybe four or five months between bathroom cleanings, dustings, etc..., whereas my wife leaves her crap everywhere (I have, on multiple occasions, found cereal bowls in the bed) but about once a week goes on a cleaning/sweeping/mopping/baseboard dusting binge.

So I'm not even sure the category of cleanliness holds together, conceptually. Everyone's got shit they care about that they need/want to make themselves comfortable and happy and shit they don't care about at all.

toothpaste in the sink? as if you brush your teeth

Did anyone else read this post and think, "hmmm it sounds like Ezra's life could serve as an introduction to oppertunity cost?"

...OK then, I'll be going now.

Does anyone like to clean? Cooking is creative and if you are a nazi about it, as I am, you get lots of praise for it. I do about 95% of the cooking and half, maybe a bit more, of the cleaning in my house. That's 'cause in Texas, we haven't managed to catch up to that whole "men cook" thing, I think.

Posted by: Amanda | Mar 24, 2005 10:52:15 AM

Another gal here who hates to clean. I don't mind dishes & laundry, but major cleaning I avoid until it is unavoidable anymore (in other words, until we invite company over and I am shamed into cleaning).

I like cooking, but my husband likes it even more, so he does the majority of it. He's a pretty good cook, so I'm not complaining.
