Greenspan Hackery Watch: Democratic Leadership Edition

Harry Reid don't suffer no fools:

"I'm not a big Greenspan fan -- Alan Greenspan fan," Reid said when asked about the Fed chairman's testimony this week urging Congress to deal quickly with the financial problems facing Social Security and Medicare. "I voted against him the last two times. I think he's one of the biggest political hacks we have in Washington."

Reid said that when Bill Clinton was president, Democrats had confronted the deficit problem by enacting a tax increase in 1993, which helped bring about a balanced budget and strong economic growth later in the decade.

"Why doesn't he respond to the Republicans and tell them the big problem here is the debt that this administration [has] created?" he said. "We had a $7 trillion-dollar surplus when Bush took office. Now we have a $3 or $4 trillion-dollar deficit. That's, in fact, what Greenspan should be telling people."

Update: Don't underestimate the power of this move. It looks a bit intemperate, and it'll certainly be judged so by the usual lineup of basic cable gasbags, but Reid has shattered the consensus that St. Alan is above reproach. Tomorrow, when everybody's buzzing about Reid's unexpected and reprehensible broadside, Greenspan will find himself in the middle of a partisan food-fight, with one side unearthing all his hackishness and the other side reiterating the terms of his canonization. As soon as that happens, he's fair game and the grave, opaque utterances he intones from atop Sinai will be reported as what they are -- partisan pronouncements that need to be balanced by a quote from a Brookings Institution Scholar. If Greenspan is going to insist on being a hack, he's going to have to give up his special exemption from the press's objectivity rules. Reid's just hurrying along the process.

Update 2: Check the RNC flack's response:

Brian Jones, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, which a few weeks ago sharply attacked Reid, called the minority leader's comments regrettable.

"It's unfortunate that at a time when the president is looking to engage Congress in a substantive and meaningful discussion on Social Security that Harry Reid is spending his time attacking the Federal Reserve chairman," he said.

So lame it could have come from a Daschle-era Democrat. Goddamn are we hitting harder these days!

When is Harry Reid going to stop pulling punches? Inquiring minds need to know!

BTW, have I lost a month of my life, or is your timestamp a month ahead?

Word. When I post late at night, I often set the date to tomorrow, as I find many readers don't venture beyond the day stamp. Hit the wron button. Now fixed. All better.

Now that housing prices have reached insane peaks he suggests a consumption tax to "encourage savings" and cut down on consumption.......not a bad idea--rather libertarian of him--but a year or two late. Guess he's rethinking the idea of inflating us out of our deficit woes.

It is disappointing for the RNC that the Senate Democrats aren't using the same playbook they are. Damn that must be frustrating.

Yes, I was so glad to hear Harry Reid not only call Greenspan a hack, but also say (in paraphrase) that Bush hadn't met a crisis he hadn't manufactured.

Ezra, I noticed your mention of Greenspan as a Randian earlier, but it can't be repeated too often.

Greenspan was (is?) literally a cultist -- a cultist of Ayn Rand no less.

It's no wonder he hates Social Security.

Setting interest rates is one thing. Bloviating about other policies when he's been in love with Ayn Rand's half-baked ideas is another.

I'd not trust a cultie to manage my portfolio (otherwise I'd be buying stock in Battlefield Earth.

Let's hope Greenspan gets the skewering he deserves.

Thank God. I am happier than I can express.

Let me explain why. Yes, Greenspan's conduct during the Bush administration has been politically motivated, contradictory, and hackish. Yet that's not even the half of it. The idea of an independent monetary authority is weak enough as is: Alan Greenspan, with his vague pronouncements and insistence on being the sage of the economy, makes it even worse. As I railed about the other day, the man is a true believer in the most cynical program of economics ever devised, and the idea that he's about oversight is the worst of it. I say Harry Reid should confront him at a Senate hearing, confront him in an imperious Senatorial bullying way that is so out of fashion these days. It's well worth it.

Does Reid read the Angrybear? We've been hammering Greenspan for a while.

Posted by: pgl | Mar 4, 2005 8:49:14 AM

What do you want to bet that Andrea Mitchell is on Meet the Press this Sunday to comment with journalistic objectivity about Social Security and the economy in general?

Posted by: dc | Mar 4, 2005 10:22:29 AM

The point about Reid putting Greenspan into play for partisan criticism is greatly appreciated.

Someday, Robert Rubin will chair the Fed. Someday!

Posted by: Ethical werewolf | Mar 4, 2005 11:14:08 AM

What do you want to bet that Andrea Mitchell is planning revenge right now?? When Kerry criticized Greenspan in one of the debates she went off on him. She has no objectivity with Social Security and the economy in general.

I think there's broad agreement that Greenspan has been a good Fed chairman. Take a broad survey of economists and policy makers, ask them how good of a Fed chairman he's been... and you'll get overwhelming positives. But that's just one of the roles that he's made for himself in Washington. When he starts testifying and making personal comments of his own about the economy and federal budget in general, he's using his clout to do more than what is expected of him. He knows exactly what he's doing-- playing politics to try and affect policy decisions.

That is why Reid's comments are correct and long overdue.

Posted by: Tim | Mar 4, 2005 1:11:05 PM

Wait for it... Someone in the wingnutosphere is gonna take Reid's quote, "I'm not a big Greenspan fan..." and spin the headline, "Nevada Senator Speaks Out Against Jews."
