Fight the Bankruptcy Bill
Over at Eschaton, Atrios is overseeing Bankruptcy Day, in opposition to the awful bill. This is really about as bad as it gets. I can understand the philosophical underpinnings of Social Security privatization -- I don't agree with them, but I can accept that some argue for it in good conscience. Not the Bankruptcy Bill. This is a simple way to screw the poor to serve powerful credit card companies. It's an infuriating, sick piece of legislation that our government should be ashamed to even consider. So call your Senators, e-mail your congresscritters -- keep this thing from passing. This is the true class warfare, and in this war, the poor are losing. From Atrios:
Senate switchboard:
(202) 224-3121
Call Joe Biden and explain how you can, in good conscience, no longer support his presidential bid. Shame, that:
202-224-5042
Call Senator Lautenberg:
(202) 224-3224
Call Senator Specter:
202-224-4254
Patty Murray
(202) 224-2621
Maria Cantwell
202-224-3441
Olympia Snowe
(202) 224-5344
Herb Kohl
(202) 224-5653
Update: Looks like we lost on the Bankruptcy Bill. Might want to call Biden anyway and tell him how seared into your memory this disappointment is. Scare his staff a bit, spread the word that the base is watching. Anyway, I'm off to cleanse myself by voting for a progressive. Villaraigosa's about to be one vote closer to the runoff...

I think it's too late. Cloture vote already happened and that was the only thing that required the participation Democrats.

We have to protect the poor credit card companies from the greedy poor. If we don't, the 9/11 victims will have died in vain.

In addition, I'd like to suggest everyone to contact your representatives to stop the imminent passage of Taft-Hartley.

Glad you're voting for Villaraigosa. I lived in LA when he lost to Hahn and it was a sad day. Villaraigosa is impressive, energizing, and I REALLY want him to push Hahn out of the primary. Glad you're doing your part.

Good God, it isn't just the "poor." It's YOU! And ME! In fact, only the truly poor will pass the means test for bankruptcy, as I understand it. Of course, they won't rack up the debts in the first place or be able to afford a lawyer in the second, which means this is a bankruptcy elimination bill.
Come to think of it, all Bush administration bills are elimination bills. Name one that doesn't do the opposite of what its title implies it will. I can't think of a one.

Frigging Republicans, every one of them. You call them, they are off my radar. I don't talk to Republicans.

Even fucking Clinton and Feinstein wanted to rub some KY on this turkey baster before reaming it into the American public.
If there is a case study for why the Green Party even exists, here it is.
And, oh yeah, fuck Bush.

File this under Stupid Activism tricks...
I came home from work the other day and I had received seven credit card applications (all pre-approved!) between Friday and Monday. I generally get about four per week (my credit is good, and I carried a balance for a while at one point. They love me). Since I already have two credit cards, I really don't need any more.
Wouldn't it be neat if those of us who got all of these applications just forwarded them on to the offices of senators who voted for cloture? People did this with those annoying AOL CDs a while ago...
Or, even better, give a friendly Senator or Representative (Feinstein? Feingold?)a huge sack of these damned things to dump out on the floor of Congress--kind of like that scene in *Miracle on 34th Street* that proved that Kringle is really Santa Claus.
