More Later? Please?

Josh Marshall has the bad habit of mentioning something ultra-interesting and then shunting it off with a "more later...", though anxious readers checking back later rarely discover more. Unfortunately, it seems his buddy Steve Clemons has seen Josh that trait and raised him a "thermonuclear exchange". In context of a post on presidential speaking fees, Steve writes:

Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage*
$25,000

*(TWN Note: Armitage is worth much more as he is the guy who really did stop a thermonuclear exchange between Pakistan and India about 90 minutes before the missiles began to fly. . .no joke)

You uh, want to elaborate on that one, Steve? Suddenly the speaking fees seem a smidge beside the point.

It's like previews, except better. You want to know more, you feel like you've already seen the movie.

I vaguely remember this story. Back when people (me) were arguing against US intervention in Iraq, this came up, and I imaging India (or Pakistan) making the same case the US was using against Iraq in order to launch a pre-emptive war that would have been very nasty. (Pakistan supports terrorists! Pakistan was weapons! Pakistan has ignored the UN! etc. etc. etc.) I imagine it would have been bad for Bush if one of those countries used his language to start a terrible war that would have wiped out a lot of people.

I love your blog -- and your commentary on tons of different issues. I promise to write up the Dick Armitage story soon...I really, really promise. I should have made that entry on speaker's fees two or three different posts and put the recent items on Ridge, Evans, Thompson, Powell, Brokaw and Armitage an item unto itself -- and then should have told the G.H.W. Bush and Rodrigo Rato stories later...but glad you peeled back the onion skin of the item on Armitage.

Thanks very much for your blog, and your generous comments. I got your nudge today....

but, more later ;-)
