Ding, Dong

Doug Feith has quit. Oh happy day! The prime incompetent amid a sea of pretenders, he distinguished himself as an omnipresent voice for incompetence, playing a crucial part in fucking up of the invasion, and occupation, of Iraq. To quote Suellentrop:

Of all the revelations that have surfaced about the Abu Ghraib prison-abuse scandal so far, the least surprising is that Douglas Feith may be partly responsible. Not a single Iraq war screw-up has gone by without someone tagging Feith—who, as the Defense Department's undersecretary for policy, is the Pentagon's No. 3 civilian, after Donald Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz—as the guy to blame. Feith, who ranks with Wolfowitz in purity of neoconservative fervor, has turned out to be Michael Dukakis in reverse: ideology without competence.

Should be getting a Presidential Medal of Freedom any day now.

The only rational explanation I can come up with is that this addresses an unavoidable prosecution involving leaks - either to Likud or concerning Plame. Feith is too sympatico to have gone the way of Clarke or Powell.

Personal reasons, eh? I always want the juicy details. Just exactly what kind of personal reasons are we talking about? Anal warts? Brain tumor? Loveless marriage? Oh, unless they mean this as a euphemism for something else.

And I agree with you, M. They will find someone worse than Mr. FUBAR. We should start trying out new nicknames for the replacement. But then again, much like pets, they need to leave with us for a while before a name suitable to their character is found.

Why does the one part of the Bush administration that needed to change the most with the post-election shuffle but did not change suddenly single a change? Actually it did change but more so rather than less by the DOD becoming more powerful with the take over of the CIA’s Black Ops.

Does this mean the Necons have recognized that Iraq is a lost cause and Feith is the first of the rats to jump ship? That can’t be true – the Necons have a proven track record of inability to recognize reality – especially Feith. Feith is the embodiment of Murphy's Law.

Maybe Feith is up for a promotion. He’s going to an ambassadorship in Europe so he can teach those foreigners what Americans are about. Or, maybe DOD is actually setting up its own State Department and Feith will head that. See, we needn’t have worried about Rice’s move to State, she will have no more influence than Powell did

Maybe Feith is not actually quitting. He’s going to head up the DOD’s new Black Ops group. I’ve got to stop commenting – I’m scarring myself.

Who in this administration has displayed any competence? Rove, I suppose, and Cheney. But they're competent only in winning domestic political battles. Other than that, competence is more likely than not to get someone canned. I like Alan's theory as an explanation.

Can we maybe have a sidebar with a WH scandal watch? There's, like, 20 or so that we haven't heard of in a while, including the Israeli spying thing. Whatever happened to the Repug hacking of our computers? And so forth.

I think Feith's "damaged goods" after the implication of his entanglement (past/present) with Larry Franklin/AIPAC and the truth about no WMD and the security disaster in Iraq. Sy Hersh's recent allegations certainly couldn't have helped to boost Feith's PR. It takes a major uncovering of impropriety and an elephant-sized monkey wrench to unloose the feithful..er, faithful.. from the Bush Administration these days. It seems it's been done, though. Spending more time with the family. Uh huh.

He can't leave soon enough for my liking.
