At Least Give Us An Abacus

So, as Jesse finds out, the Cato and Heritage Social Security calculators are totally misleading. But the real question is, why don't liberal organizations have similar, albeit less lie-filled, calculators online? Why isn't the DNC hitting their list with a calculator letting them see what the Bush plan could do to their retirement? Why isn't Kerry e-mailing the world with his progressive-themed java applets? I mean, not to pick on anyone, but CAP doesn't even mention Social Security on their front page! The Heritage Foundation, in contrast, has it (along with their [email protected]*!#& calculator) in as prominent a spot as they could find. The right's institutions, while certainly mendacious, are a hell of a lot more focused than ours.

The calculators, by the way, are a good example of what I was inarticulately arguing earlier about the political adeptness of policy organizations.

Um, how can the DNC put up a calculator for Bush's plan when Bush doesn't, like, have a plan yet? Wouldn't putting one up be a sucker's move? When Bush did put together plan the Rethugs could tell everyone how the Dem's got it all wrong.

Hey, no fair. I did a bunch of charts on the 2004 Trustees Report over the summer for a paper on the fact that social security really isn't in crisis. Why aren't they on the front page goddamnit!?!

Why don't we liberals have stuff like this?

We're too busy giving our money to help tsunami victims, those in poverty and various other good works.

It's easy to have money to create Cato/Heritage style groups when you hoard your cash.

Even better, why not have a calculator than not only calculates the actual results of such a policy, but then goes on to compare it to the Heritage and CATO calculators and explains why they're lying to you?
