I guess Marx comes out ahead on a superficial level.

But it is also true that Marx advocated a system of thought that not only legitimized violence, but required it.

Marx didn't advocate much of anything, just like Adam Smith wasn't an advocate of any particular political system. Other men took their ideas and turned them from tools of analysis to tools of ideology. A great deal is attributed to both men that they never said, by persons who have no idea what either one of them wrote. Communism and Capitalism are religions, and as such, are commonly turned into instruments of violence.
