Nicely said!

The GOP is feeding and grooming the white horse for Petraeus to ride into the political picture as we speak. (I don't think it impossible that he could emerge as the 'savior' candidate for the GOP in the 08 elections).

Major benefit: he can actually speak literate sentences in English! (and probably knows some history as well).

Why do I have this feeling that this whole thing is a well-scripted TV series and Petraeus is the character who emerges from relative obscurity (as a two-star general), gets his 3rd and 4th stars quickly and goes on the save the nation and the world by outfoxing the former lead who was using him?

He can speak pretty well, but more importantly his last name sounds vaguely classical. Most people don't know beans about Petraeus's career, but they'll still think he sounds more like an Important General than, say, David Plotnick.

Somewhere I think I read that Petraeus is Roman for Protector?

Isn't it kinda silly to assume that the answer to the question, "Will success in Iraq make us safer?" is instructive without the answer to the question, "Will withdrawal from Iraq make us less safe?"
