It's Not About Petraeus

Not only is it immaterial whether Petraeus's graduate thesis is a bit hollow, to argue over it takes you down the wrong path. This whole dispute over whether Petraeus is a genuine saint or a false messiah is part of the same conversation, the one that goes "is David Petraeus man enough to fix everything that has gone wrong in Iraq?"

But that's a bad conversation. It buys the premise that individual American leaders can still fix Iraq so long as they have enough wisdom and pony bait. But whether Petraeus actually shoots insurgent-killing lasers from his eyes or not, Iraq's problems are too substantial and deep-seated to be fixed by an outside country, much less a mere individual. The argument, as relates to Petraeus, isn't whether this man is good or bad. It's whether this situation remains at all susceptible to our military's efforts, or it's now a matter entirely dependent on factions internal to Iraq. If you want to argue against Petraeus, the argument should really be that he's beside the point.

"is David Petraeus man enough to fix everything that has gone wrong in Iraq?"

That's the wrong question. The correct question is:

Do I want to have a beer with David Petraeus?

Or in light of Larry Craig:

Is David Petraeus gay? Has David Petraeus ever been gay?

And apropos of nothing, am I the only person in the world who's seen Black Cat, White Cat, and thus is overjoyed that HBO casting has discovered Branka Katic?

And FWIW, folks, get ready for Petraeus. This WH knows how to do an excellent post-labor day September rollout, and we're about to get a Big Petraeus Rollout.

I've seen it. I went on a Kusturica binge last summer.

"I've seen it. I went on a Kusturica binge last summer."

The amazingly sexy female lead of Black Cat, White Cat - the one from the sunflower field sex scene - has gotten nice parts on Entourage and Big Love of late.

No. It is about Petraeus. The question being, "Can General Petraeus save the Republican party?".

Excuse me, but what is "pony bait"?

we're about to get a Big Petraeus Rollout.

And then it's off to war with Iran!

Seriously.

Sure, you scoff now.

But When General Petraeus Gives His Report, the power of His words in and of themselves will alight upon Iraq, and soothe the burning wounds, and lo, the crooked places will be made straight, and the high places will be made lo.

I agree with Matt. But the purpose of making Petreaus the centerpiece of the surge has less to do with his qualifications and his ability to reverse the course of the war, as much as it has to do with getting as many Democrats as possible to go along with the war (until Bush is out of office).
Democrats are as beholden to the cult of American militarism as are the Republicans, if not more so as they're constantly forced to prove themselves as tough guys and pro-troops.
Team Bush knows that so long as the strategy belongs to Petreaus and not to Bush, it'll appear more credible. More importantly, the likelihood that Dems will question a man in uniform is negated by their desire to appear pro-Military. They'll go along with continuing the war because a "general" claims its working.

Ezra's thesis is broadly true. The graduate thesis that's really applicable here isn't Petraeus's, but H.R. McMaster's: "Dereliction of Duty", which argued specifically that American generals were derelict in their duty to advise political leaders that the war was unwinnable. Whether you think Petraeus is doing a reasonably good job in Iraq or not, or whether you think that's irrelevant because Iraq is so deeply screwed or not, it is quite clear that Petraeus is allowing himself to be used to paint a much prettier picture of what's happening than is actually the case. I wonder whether Col. McMaster at this point views this as a "dereliction of duty".

Herschel: 'pony bait' relates to 'pony plans', blog shorthand for wishful thinking. The various proposals for Iraq are all variants on looking for the magic pony.

The Bush/Cheney gang has had eight years of eating lunch on the Ein Volk Ein Reich Ein Doofus model.

Shifting proxy and vicarious power from the general to one character is the way of the Republicult. Everyone gets to have an imaginary drink with the Chimperor and share in incredible power once the ponzi scheme plays out.

The messianic marketing which is friendly both to the congregated whackjobs in the theofascist wing can be equally serviceable to the corpofascist locksteppers looking for the manliest of CEOs to whup AmeriCo and its subsidiaries into lootable profiteering shape.

Petraeus wouldn't be the first empty mascot or logo-cartoon used to promise the masses s/he'll "save" the day from the [insert appropriate opposite empty mascot, cf, "Saddam was a Baaaaad Maaaaan", and "Osama Dead or Alive".]

If I were a cynic, I'd view the interchangeable al-Zarkawi and al-Zwahiri -- the Campbell Soup Twins of Terrorists -- and the WH Dept of Hooey's apparent plan to conflate them to double the usage and confuse press and public alike.

I just think the boneheads in the Republicult spin machine are just sloppy and dumb here.

Trying to resolve Iraq's political problems that undperpin the civil war with the US military makes as much sense as buying a F-16 to catch fish.
