Hendrik Hertzberg Has A Blog
So should the rest of us retire? Compared to Hertzberg, we're largely illiterates. So rippling through the blogospher this morning is a search for comparative advantage. Matt's relying on his remarkable quantity of writing to pull him through. Me? Well, I post up lots of graphs. Does Hertzberg even know how to embed an image? It's unclear. I hope not, though. I do fear, however, that once he begins using more line breaks, he'll be unstoppable.
In ay case, go read Hertzberg.

This could be bad news for you. Hertzberg is the first thing I look for in the New Yorker every week. On the other hand, can he maintain that kind of impact on a daily or more frequent basis?

"No one naked around here. No chaos at YearlyKos. No “sweet smell of marijuana,” as the straight papers used to refer to it. No demands for revolution. No denunciations of bourgeois democracy. The Democratic National Committee Chairman is listened to respectfully and cheered enthusiastically." ...Hertzberg
You might as well retire, Ezra, try corporate law. HH nailed the problems of the left in one paragraph.

Can anyone figure out how to get a feed of just his blog? Clicking on the feed link takes me to page full of feeds I don't particularly want to read, but no Hertzfeed.

Wow. Hertzberg reads my stuff.
More proof the internet has changed the world in ways we could not have imagined fifteen years ago.

How about persistence and depth as your banners? HH admits he's just lost his blogging virginity, and yours was lost long ago (and 'miles and miles before we sleep').
Actually, he is quite readable, but I sense he's more aware of the general tenor of things than he is of the details of the stuff you make your daily fare.
When you are cranked up (quite often!), you do just fine in the use of language. So, 'relax, just do it'.
Frost and Frankie Goes to Hollywood in one comment. There's some range for ya.

Well, mangled Frost.

As Matt pointed out, Hertzberg's output is a little scant so far. He's an amazing prose stylist (as well as being extremely perceptive and all that), but I suspect he puts too much time into the craft of writing to be an effective blogger.
Blogging really requires something like A. J. Liebling's credo: he claimed to be "faster than anyone who's better, and better than anyone who's faster."
Posted by: Tom Hilton | Aug 3, 2007 3:08:02 PM
The actual Liebling quote: "I can write better than anybody who can write faster, and I can write faster than anybody who can write better." I remembered the gist of it, anyway.

I remember when I was at the The New Republic in the mid 1980s and Rick was editor. I felt like Sydney Greenstreet in Maltese Falcon: "By Gad, sir, you are a character. There's never any telling what you'll say or do next, except that it's bound to be something astonishing."
And he still is astonishing.

Hertzberg himself is semi-literate. His fact-checkers overlooked a recent spelling by himself of "Saudia Arabia" as he displayed his ignorance, inherited from his former boss Jimmy Carter, on the Middle East.
The weird little dude had previously commented on my blog about my questioning his "fact-checking" last year while he tried to pull a fast one in his New Yorker column. Adam Gopnik & Jeffrey Goldberg are the reasons I read the New Yorker. I treat Hendrik as a fiction writer.

The guy who wrote this:
Evidence that AGW is cooked up by lefty Luddites & Socialists out to destroy Capitalism can only be inferred by the Cargo Cult Science constantly emitted by empty-headed media types, often meteorologists afflicted by grandiosity and news commentators, like the fact-challenged Trent Lott Jr. named Shep Smith on Fox TV.calls Hendrik Hertzberg "semi-literate".
Chortle. Snort. Guffaw.

Hmm.. Looks like Republican Blog-Warriors are everywhere these days. Do they pay you minimum wage davey my boy?

I have fun polluting pristine minds with facts, just like I get off fisking Rick over at the New Yorker occasionally when he gets his facts wrong---that happens frequently. He started the correspondence with me, not vice-versa. I've still got our e-mails back & forth in a folder.
George Packer, Lawrence Wright, Adam Gopnik, Jeffrey Goldberg----four reasons I still subscribe to TNY.

Wow, he misspelled Saudi Arabia. Oh the humanities! Boy, that really undercuts everything he writes.

I have fun polluting pristine minds with facts...
Wow, this guy is just a never-ending source of unintentional hilarity.
