BREAKING: Gonzales Resigns

By Deborah Newell Tornello a.k.a. litbrit

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will step down:

WACO, Tex., Aug. 27 — Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales, whose tenure has been marred by controversy and accusations of perjury before Congress, has resigned. A senior administration official said he would announce the decision later this morning in Washington.

Mr. Gonzales, who had rebuffed calls for his resignation, submitted his to President Bush by telephone on Friday, the official said. His decision was not immediately announced, the official added, until after the president invited him and his wife to lunch at his ranch near here.

Mr. Bush has not yet chosen a replacement but will not leave the position open long, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the resignation had not yet been made public.

Despite intensifying pressure, not to mention the accruing roar from critics on both sides of the aisle, Gonzales has long held firm, refusing to admit any wrongdoing at any time, especially not as pertains to the raft of politically-motivated US attorney firings. The verbal Möbius strips of twisting, false, and oftentimes outright mendacious statements the Attorney General tossed around in sworn testimony before Congress have led some Congressmen to not only raise the question of filing perjury charges, but also start preparing articles of impeachment against him.

And though I follow politics as much as anyone who isn't directly involved in government work--and certainly more than most busy mamas I know--I must admit, this development caught me completely off-guard, just as Rove's resignation did. As Minstrel Boy is fond of saying, when the wrecked ship begins to take on water, follow the rats.

This administration uses appointees as car owners use oil filters. They catch the sludge aimed at Bush and Cheney, and when they're full, they're replaced. That Rove and Fredo left so close together simply results from the sheer volume of accusations of White House wrongdoing.

Stuart, the problem is that the supply of fanatically loyal Bushite oil filters is drying up. There's no one out there like Rove or Gonzales. Maybe Bush can appoint Harriet Miers during the recess.

sounds like they're clearing the decks for their September report. i also wouldn't put it past them to recess appoint the next AG. NPR can't stop talking about how this signals a willingness to work with Congress. makes me wonder if i've been living in a different country for 7 years.

"NPR can't stop talking about how this signals a willingness to work with Congress. makes me wonder if i've been living in a different country for 7 years."

Yes they have.

"Signals a willingness to work with Congress"???!!!??

Jesus.

I think that this is political theater.

They're going to appoint another absolutely unacceptable Bush bootlicker, and when the Democrats in Congress try to push back, they'll claim that we're "playing politics" and "jeopardizing national security." They're betting that the Congressional Democrats will cave. I wish I could be certain they were wrong.

How odd. What I've heard on NPR is that Bush may well resort to a recess appointment if Congress doesn't support his nominee. Could it be that NPR is presenting more than one view again!??

As for the resignations, Rove said the chief of staff was encouraging people to either commit to stay for the rest of Bush's term or leave now. Not sure if that's the real reason, but it might be a factor in the timing.

You are all forgetting the first rule of White House news releases. News is released on Friday afternoons. Distractions are released on Monday mornings.

was that on a mid-day talk-show? the way it was reported on their morning news show (by Cokie Roberts) was that this signalled a willingness to work with Congress. what a pundit might have said on a round-table discussion on a mid-day talk-show doesn't change the fact that that was how NPR chose to report it in their news broadcast this morning. don't get me wrong, i love NPR and they're almost my sole source of news, but they got this one totally wrong.

good ole sanpete, always willing to give the benefit of the doubt

Just reporting the facts, jj. I can't remember which program I heard the recess nominee idea on, but it was this morning here--maybe midday back east. May not have been the news, wasn't Cokie Roberts.
