Livening Up The Debates

Slate has some good ideas for injecting a bit more excitement into the presidential debates. My favorite is creating round-robin debates based on random draws that end in three candidate face-offs where one participant is always over 10% in the national polls. That way the frontrunners would submit to serious scrutiny, the debates would actually offer the participants time to discuss ideas, and the second tier candidates would have a chance to break out.

On a totally other note, I'm off to the Hillman awards, and won't be back in town till tomorrow night. Blogging will be light, at best. If the Weekenders want to jump in, they're certainly welcome to.

I think that the large number candidates on both sides merits some American ingenuity. The debates could be used as charitable fundraisers or even candidate fundraising.

So- round robin debates with ALL registered candidates invited. Televised debates are done by party affliation and the American viewing public votes via phone a la Americal Idol. The money raised goes to the candidate or to an announced charity- or even split between the two.

So two debates a day- one Democratic, one Republican and the winner is announced before the next debate. Questions for the debates are randomly selected from a list compiled by a million monkeys typing on old Underwood typwriters. Rankings would be listed in Vegas for the added benefit of the voting public. And new candidates could be added upto the end of the first round. The second round would consist of the winners of the first round and if an odd number, a wild card candidate voted in by phone by the public. The whole thing continues until you have a winner or the monkeys go on strike.

The debates don't need to be more entertaining. They need to have real questions. I outlined two ways to do that in these petitions; please sign and forward to all your friends:

On a sidenote, it's odd how those who push for "open source" debate content aren't exactly rushing to push for the content to actually be worth anything.

I'd love to see some real questions but they aren't going to be presented under the current political negotiations that are the debates. This is why I would go for random. If it can't be informative, it should at least be entertaining.
