Fox and the CBC

B. Beutler's analysis of the Fox News/Congressional Black Alliance split gets the big picture right and the small picture wrong. It's certainly true that "Fox News is, for all intents and purposes, a Republican propaganda network," and their action have to be evaluated through that lens. Less convincing is Beutler's argument that "the only reasonable conclusion one can draw is that the network predicted--perhaps correctly--that an alliance with the Congressional Black Caucus would cause a rift within enemy party and have the beneficial side-effect of making Fox appear welcoming to opposition and minority points of view."

I highly doubt they're half that smart. Remember: The organized opposition to Fox News is a very recent occurrence in the Democratic Party. Fox almost certainly assumed their sponsorship would go virtually unnoticed, but would prove useful whenever they had to burnish their bipartisan credentials. More interesting is their choice of the Congressional Black Caucus as the group to pair with. There's a reason Fox hasn't approached the Children's Defense Fund, or the Sierra Club, or even MoveOn.org. The longtime slam of on Democrats is that they're a party composed primarily of coastal elites and racialized interest groups. The CBC, which is largely controlled by very liberal, old school African-American politicians, represents the Democratic Party in precisely the way conservatives would like to see it. It is the group most likely to unsettle Fox's basel, and so most likely to further Fox's goals. Small wonder, then, that Fox is so willing to donate their air time and resources to publicize the CBC's importance in the Democratic coalition.

Yeah, I thought Brian's take on Fox's immediate motives was kinda over-analyzed. I'm closer to your position, Ezra, but I suspect some more skullduggery. Faux News loves to color the questions, and skew the post-action 'analysis', and having Dems and blacks together is a real weiner roast for Faux (where the weiner is both the Dems and the CBC).

That said, I feel impelled to wonder what in the f**k the CBC is trying to do. Surely the ridiculously small donations NewsCorp has made to CBC members/group aren't a serious motivator. Is the CBC trying to strike some posture of 'independence' because of feelings of neglect or being taken for granted - now that immigration is targeting the latinos, and the latino electorate is growing way faster than the black voter-base?

I can't figure it out, but if the CBC thinks Faux or the GOP is going to be helpful, they are woefully blinkered to reality.

I have a post up as well about the entire CBC debate debacle. I think the reason Fox is playing nice with the CBC is not becuase they have some nefarious goal to portray all Democrats as like the CBC, but instead as part of their greater outreach to minority communities. This doesn't mean, however, that we shoudln't resist Fox and encourage all candidates to withdraw from this debate.

The greater point, I think, is the relevence of the CBC, andhow they time and time again put their own interests and that of their members above that of their party or of any progressive or Democratic policy goals. We should really ask ourselves, why support a CBC, why listen to them if all they do is support corrupt judges for important chairmanships, defend William Jefferson when he's clearly a crook and shill for Fox News?

Fox News thinks, wrongly, that (1) Democratic leaders are inordinately afraid of disappointing minority constituent groups and (2) black leaders are hyper-sensitive to perceived slights, and are willing and able to make national Dems pay in the currency of diminished turnout. Not that they were expecting Dems to boycott the debate; on the contrary, Fox thought the threat of a backlash among African-Americans would compel the leading candidates to participate.

Again Fox is wrong on both counts, which will be proven when none of the Dems is harmed in the slightest for boycotting the Fox-CBC debate. But of course that's what Fox was hoping for.

Very perceptive and almost too controversial to mention in polite circles. Washington hates the truth. It is a shame that the leaders of the CBC aren't a tad more conscious of their role vis a vis the Republican base and how FOX is milking them for GOP turnout.

They want to become strong and so they can kill the monsters more easily and they can go to upgrade very quickly. I think it is very fun and all players want to play the game.
