The New, New Republic

Oh man, I'd forgotten how hilariously wrong TNR's endorsement of Joe Lieberman was. Kos reminds:

But one day, Joe Lieberman's warnings in this campaign will look prophetic. And the principles he has espoused will once again guide the Democratic Party. It will be the work of this magazine, to whatever small degree possible, to hasten that day.

Sadly, New Republic editor Frank Foer is slamming the door on that vision:

The magazine’s editorial voice has tended to veer between liberal and neo-conservative — something that Franklin Foer, the magazine’s editor for a year, said was irritating to many on the political left. The magazine is now cementing what Mr. Foer calls its “center-left” philosophy, although he said its reported articles would “transcend ideology.”

Lieberman, of course, is now on the far right of American foreign policy thinking, and Peter Beinart, the editor at the time of this endorsement, just wrote an article examining how he got the war so wrong.

As for the merits of the magazine pulling back to a biweekly schedule, this is a change in frequency, not content production. TNR is doubling in size, going glossier, and generally becoming a slightly different publication. This particular transformation isn't a retreat or a sign of declining fortunes, it's a move to go after a somewhat different market. As Foer says in the Times article, they're very pleased that circulation has increased by 30% Washington (even as it's fallen across the country). Expect the magazine to become somewhat less ideologically combative and emerge more the sort of publication that beltway types -- rather than junkies, activists, or ideologues -- enjoy reading.

DIstrust those circulation figures. I cancelled my subscription when Spencer Ackerman left (not a protest gesture -- at first I didn't know why he left -- but a delighted recognition that now, AT LAST!, my sole remaining reason for subscribing to the one of the world's most annoying magazines had vanished.

Did it work? No. My subscription renewal just showed up on my credit card. Time for annoying emails.

Otoh, my subscription to TAP seems to have disappeared or lapsed or heaven knows what.

Why are they going after a different market, if not because their prospects in a new market look better than that in their present market? Maybe their prospects at present suck because of TNR, maybe the prospects suck because of the present market. If it's the latter, Foer should get credit for foresight, as there are a lot of other magazines (TAP, The Nation, The Weekly Standard, National Review, etc.) that don't appear to be making that change. If it's the former--well, then, it looks like a response to declining fortunes.

These guys dream of being mistaken for hawks. In truth they are simply mimicing the Repugnicons and so take part ownership in their failures. Neither understands the current conflict they gorge on, nor it seems can they grasp the greater strategic consequences of their ineptness.

Uh, I think we all know that TNR always did poorly among junkies; they were way behind Angel Dust Monthly -- behind even Crack! The Magazine for Crackheads -- and, in fact, could barely match High Times in the all-important junkie demographic.

Well this bi-weekly pudding will be judged in the eating over the next six months or so. I'm giving Foer and MacNeil (the interim publisher) some grace period - by subscribing again after almost 10 years of absence.

Foer wants to be, in his words, The New Yorker of politics. Seems more than a bit ambitious.

But with Marty reduced to just 1/4 owner (and his neo-con co-investors now gone), maybe Marty can be muzzled or ignored. They need to get rid of Charles Krauthammer and Mike Kinsley as contributing editors too.

I wonder if Spakerman's problems were with Marty and his 'line' or with Foer. His return would be welcome.

How can TNR be the New Yorker of politics? The New Yorker is the New Yorker of politics. See this week's Sy Hirsch article, for example.

This is a rather credulous statement. It's a distinct sign of declining fortunes, which TNRians are spinning as best they can.

OOOO! A mealy-mouthed but pretty tip sheet for Washington insiders. Now there's good reading! I've heard that frequently the mentally impoverished are attracted to shiny objects. Now they have a new one.
