Turkey has invaded Iraq before over this. Hussein was keeping the Kurds in line (besides slaughtering them along the way for his own reasons). Who will do that when we leave?

Turkey really hasn't gotten over the dismemberment of the Ottoman empire after they were on the losing side in WWI. And the Kurds never have gotten over being split into minorities in at least 3 countries because the Brits liked nice orderly maps with straight lines where possible.

My comment at Brad's blog indicates that maybe there is some method to BushCo's apparent madness. We've been thinking of Bush pushing surging/escalating primarily to be seen to be doing something to pull victory from the hat that actually now contains a defeat posing as a rabbit.

What if the BushCo intent is to stir up Turkey, Turkish Kurds, Iraqi Kurds, Iranian Kruds, and Iran (and possibly Syria) into a stew of region-wide war to muddy the waters of US defeat in Iraq? Or maybe the scope is even wider and includes Lebanon, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Hezbollah and Hamas in addition to the others - with Israel being the special sauce for the stew. Could be quite a party stew!

If you want a world-wide War on Terror to keep us silent and in line, a real 'War on Terror' across the mideast is just what the wingnuts would like ordered: Bush as the New and Improved Alexander the Great.

I just read the whole thing as the Bush guys have internalized the "clash of civilizations" rhetoric such that seeking "clarifying moments" is a good idea.

Then why do they appear to be seeking to discourage Turkey from invading? Maybe I don't get your point.
