Those Socialistic Brits
Can you imagine reading this in the United States? Oh for a society where "solidarity" isn't a slur...

I loved this piece so much, I emailed it to my Mum and sister (a Special Ed teacher in Florida). Thanks for posting it.
It touches on all the reasons I put my kids in Montessori for their first few years of schooling. Maria Montessori was a genius, and I only wish all schools--especially public schools--would adopt her methods.

I would tend to think that most social conservatives are somewhat "socialist" in the sense you are describing. Most of the social conservatives I know are very enthusiastic about community. Not necessarily the community as a whole, but their part of it. My church has it's share of social conservatives - even among the democrats or indy liberals. Nearly everyone there embraces the community we have with great enthusiasm. When anyone in the church needs a hand moving or working on a project, there is never a problem finding help. When a family is concerned about problems with their child, there are people willing to help, any way they can.
I have my serious problems with social conservatives, but their sense of community is not one of them. Excepting that they are not always as inclusive as I would like, in their definition of their community. One of the reasons I go to the church I do is that they do not fall into that trap.

Grumpy old people expounding on how todays teenagers are all crap is hardly something we don't see here in America. I don't see anything particularly unique or insightful about this article.
