DeLay Screwed Texas
No wonder the guy moved to Virginia. His redistricting cost his state, well, a lot:
the GOP-led remap of Texas congressional boundaries cost the state at least three chairmanships. Martin Frost of Dallas would be taking over the powerful Rules Committee, which controls how bills are amended and debated. West Texan Charlie Stenholm would be the new agriculture chairman, just in time to write the next farm bill. And East Texan Jim Turner would be preparing to run the Homeland Security Committee.
"New York, Minnesota and Mississippi should send us a giant thank-you card," said Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, referring to the states the incoming chairmen of Rules, Agriculture and Homeland Security committees call home. "Tom DeLay and Rick Perry's redistricting efforts gutted Texas. ... I hope that's a lesson that no one, neither party, should ever put pure partisan interest above the interest of Texas." [...]

It's not really that delicious unless you assume that DeLay gave a damn about helping Texas, and it seems pretty clear to me that DeLay put the good of his state far, far below the good of himself and his party. Of course things didn't work out so well in those departments either.

Martin Frost was my Congessman for umpteen years. My politics have moved to the left of his, but it still would have been nice. Had the redistricting not happened, it would be hard or interesting, to guess what Frost's or Stenholm's position would be in the new Congress. Frost did run for Majority Leader, IIRC, tho he lost, and I presume remained ambitious. I am certainly happier with Speaker Pelosi than I would be with Speaker Frost.
Although I don't know that the Democratic Leadership positions indicate much about the ideology or direction of the membership.

Some of these guys weren't huge losses in the Macro scheme of things. Charlie Stenholm was very conservative (although no moreso than Colin Peterson and perhaps a bit less) but Martin Frost was one of the good guys.

Martin Frost ran in another district and lost. I'd rather take my chances than have Frost in charge of anything.

vwcat, since DeLay ran away rather than running for reelection, he doesn't seem to agree with you that his (former) constituents are still big supporters, much less that the people of Texas as a whole are.

I dunno. It's true that by challenging the Divine Right of Incumbents, a state is likely to lose some of its senior congressmen, reducing its delegation's seniority and thus reduce its influence on ccommittees, but it seems to me that this doesn't justify protecting incumbent congressional reps at all costs. This is not to justify the specific redistricting that Delay pushed, which was clearly a partisan gerrymandering, but generally the implication of this post is that anything that increases the likelyhood that incumbents could lose their seats screws over the state by reducing the relative seniority of its delegation compared to other states. The logical implication is that truly serving the state's interest means protecting incumbents. I'm sure that's not what you meant, but it does seem to be an implication, at least right now that it's midnight and I'm tired and rambling.
