MIT leads the way

(Posted by John.)

Let's ignore the world's martial troubles for a moment, and look at some good news:  MIT has announced an in-house "Manhattan Project" to spur the development of new, innovative energy technologies.

Proposed technologies include spinach-based solar panels, new batteries for hybrid cars, super-sized capacitors for the same and more.

What's interesting is that this is a multi-disciplinary effort, involving multiple areas of the academy.  What's sad is that this, on it's own, is probably going to be more effective than any of the Bush Administration's policies.

No kidding. Fucking clowns.

The thing is, an alternative energy Manhattan project would almost certainly benefit the American economy. Why? Even if the alternative energy portion doesn't pan out, we'd get new technologies (and possibly whole new industries) out of the deal. And somebody might come up with something really important.

Hybrid? I am told by an '05 Yale grad that I drive one!

The greatest inventions were made through the private sector. Now, it seems, the private sector is unable to function without massive government funds.

This is indeed encouraging news, and the folks at MIT are brilliant enought to pull it off. What concerns me is how much resistance will be encountered by whatever new technologies they propose, since the oil and power generating industries are opposed to anything that cuts into their own profit margins.
