Comment Spam
Authentication isn't doing anything to stop the comment spam. I don't know if the spammers have computer programs to beat the system or have actually hired humans to type this stuff in, but the little numbers are useless against their powers. Any ideas on how to kill this stuff? I wish Typepad had some automatic option to close comments on posts more than ten days old...

I read that they "hire" humans and pay them with porn. That is, they run porn sites that require users to type in the little numbers, and they have some program to transfer the images of the distorted numbers from other sites (like Typepad, it appears) to their porn sites, along with programs to use what gets typed in on their sites to spam or otherwise use the sites where the numbers came from.
I don't remember where I read this, though.

Perhaps many purveyors of porn and pharmaceuticals are actually avid readers of your blog, but just have horrible trouble staying on topic when they're moved to comment.

FREE!VIAGRA!NOW!
Just kidding.
I would say it's not surprising that you get a lot of comment spam. A weblog about healthcare seems to be an excellent way to reach people looking for certain highly profitable prescription drugs.

Something you're not telling us?

best option, move to not-typepad :-D
i don't see the spam, does it get into the moderation queue?
Posted by: almostinfamous | May 6, 2006 10:59:01 AM
on my Movable Type but not-Typepad blog, I use a free, 3rd-party plug-in called MT-Close to close old posts in batches.
Posted by: fiat lux | May 6, 2006 11:40:11 AM
Require registration? Spam filter? Manually close old threads?
Anything to get rid of that stupid last step that prevents me from using Lynx to comment. Ugh.
Posted by: wcw | May 6, 2006 1:30:22 PM
Wordpress is cool, you just upload it, config your cgi on ezraklein.com and its free and modifyable. Never have comment problems.
Does type pad allow you to embargo all comments that have more than 1 or 2 urls in it, until you approve them? that would work too, word press does it.

Obviously what you need to do is get a Mac, or at least run Linux. I have no idea what these computer problems are that you're talking about, I run Linux at work and have a Mac at home. I am so great.
Posted by: Cryptic Ned | May 6, 2006 2:39:42 PM
Ned is right. Linux is the BOMB. There is so much out there written for Linux for this type of application.
Posted by: Fred Jones | May 6, 2006 3:44:24 PM
Obviously, Ezra, what you need to do is run Linux on your Mac. I'm sure that doing so will solve all your problems with Typepad.
If Typepad doesn't give you more options than what you are currently doing, it might be time to ditch it in favor of something else.
Posted by: Stephen | May 6, 2006 5:18:43 PM
No, you're screwed I think. Try contacting Typepad support.
Posted by: Sandals | May 6, 2006 7:40:49 PM
Can you use Haloscan for comments, or is that strictly for Blogger? Because even my new little blog with its lovely but teeny readership was getting spam comments galore before I downloaded Haloscan. So far, no spam.
Posted by: litbrit | May 6, 2006 8:22:44 PM
Running Linux wouldn't help -- the spam is on my blog, not my cpu (which is a mac). As for haloscan, I think I need to use the typepad architecture for comments.

I put it on my blog about 2 weeks ago and it seems to be working thus far....fingers crossed!

Registration has stopped spam cold on my site.
Posted by: Randy Paul | May 6, 2006 9:26:33 PM
Ezra, for typepad, try the typekey registration thing. it kinda sucks having to remember another password, but such is the way of spam-battle. and a lot of people already have it.
besides, it's helped on the blogs of a couple of friends.
Posted by: almostinfamous | May 6, 2006 11:05:46 PM
I understand, Ezra, that typepad is on the internet, and therefore the spam comments are not on your computer.
However, I have been assured that 99.99% of all computer-related problems are solved by either running Linux or using a Mac. Since you are still having a problem while using a Mac, your only hope is to install Linux.

Ha!
What if you used a custom question rather than the random authenticator? Can you do that?

Yack. House of Mirth. Never comment before coffee.

If this is true, you've got to admire them in a way. Also it's yet another piece of evidence for my "porn is the main driver of innovation in media technology" pet theory.

I'm using Wordpress also, but it's Akismet that stops spam (separate download).
Posted by: opit | May 8, 2006 12:27:00 AM
Noway can it be a bot reading those letters/numbers. Hell, sometimes it takes me 3 tries before I get that string right. Its really hard to read.
You need to require registration. That stopped spam on my site as well. Just assure the registrees that you won't require that their email address be displayed, it can be hidden. Wouldn't want the Freds of the world to be discouraged!

I can't be bothered with anything recently. I haven't been up to anything. I don't care. I haven't gotten much done lately. Not that it matters.

We’ re off! In Miami right now, waiting for our flight to San Juan to leave. Tomorrow we board Regal Princess and start a 10 day Panama Canal cruise. Along the way we will be visiting Aruba, Puerto Amador (Panama), Puntarenas (Costa Rica), Puerto Quetzal (Guatemala), Huatulco (Mexico), and finally Acapulco (also in Mexico of course).
