You, Sir, Are No Bode Miller

I can't agree with Tom Watson's Bode Miller-George W. Bush comparison. Miller, after all, is a spectacular talent (albeit quite a jerk) who just endured an ignominious implosion. But he was, then and now, an athlete's athlete, a golden boy who spent enough time on the slopes and hours on the lifts to hone what was god-given into what appeared unbeatable. He took grace and added grit, and even if he lost, it wasn't because he was undeserving of the opportunity. The comparison would be Clinton, had Clinton's personal failures succeeded in destroying, rather than merely impeding, his presidency. But not Bush. Bush was no talent, no hard worker, no Greek tragedy. He's done bad things to the country, sure, but mostly through his own ineptness and ideology, not by exhibiting brilliant promise only to dim before the spotlights. Bush exhibited no talent, failed upwards, and was never punished, because an aptitude for the presidency is not the same as an appetite for the campaign.

No, George W. Bush is no Bode Miller. And more importantly, Bode Miller is no George W. Bush. in this, Miller's hour of defeat and disdain, let's at least leave him that scrap of dignity.

IMO, Bush is sui generis. I can't think of any public figure, certainly no political figure, who has a more checkered business, military and political history, and certainly no public figure who has such poor communications, analytical and truth-telling skills.

But for his name and family background, is there much doubt Bush would long ago have been written off as a drunk, drug addled, misfit as a leader.

Now ask me what I really think of G. W. Bush.

I've discovered that the duration of a comment thread, or a blog's existence, is directly proportional to the probability that someone will compare George W. Bush with Bode Miller.

From now on, anyone who compares George W. Bush to Bode Miller automatically loses the argument.

Or has to bake me some cookies.

Or something.

Anyone else here appalled by what a bunch of whiners, babies, and showboats the US olympic contingent were?

Bickering speed skaters, mollycoddled, attention-hungry figure skaters, malcontent hockyists, hubristic snowboarders and aerialists, and so on and so forth. I mean, team USA notched a remarkable number of medals--the most ever for a games not contested on US soil (even discounting ones won in events that were created by and for Yanks, like snowboarding). Yet the games seemed like a winter resort's spring fling populated by an endless parade of spotlight hogging, emotionally retarded 20-somethings.

Agreed. What is more appalling is the desperate need of the hard left to bash Bush. This is really telling! What will they compare next to Bush? The new fall fashions?
"Yeah, those double breasted suits just don't communicate to me.....just like George Bush!".

Hey, this is fun! Maybe you can think up some too!

"Yeah, those double breasted suits just don't communicate to me.....just like George Bush!".

Heh. That was actually pretty funny.

Speaking of emotionally retarded, thanks, Fred, for trying to direct my comment toward yet another discussion about Bush.

Probably old news to everyone here by now, but Dubai Dubya's approval rating is now at an all time low of 34%. Cheney gets an 18% approval rating. Boy that's alot of "hard lefties" out there!

Posted by: sprocket | Feb 28, 2006 11:55:58 AM

Yep. It's clear that America hates America. We have met the enemy, and it is us.

What the hell is a hockyist?

The only sport I followed at all was curling. Watched every televised minute. Americans won their first-ever medal, and were exemplary gentlemen and good sports.

That's great, Bob, but Curling is not a sport. ;)

And, SP, 'hockeyist' is an archaism for hockey player.

Hey Bode, take a long ski down a long hill and keep on going. You are a real idiot. You have probably set the US team back years. Many people I have met have said they would never again contribute a penny to the team as long as you stayed.

Why Watson is only half-right, and Bode Miller is a hero:

I don't disagree with a word that Watson wrote.

No, Bush isn't Miller, and Miller isn't Bush. But I do think Miller's boasting about his "awesome" Olympics is emblematic of a certain type of reality-challenged view you find in Bush's America.

Hey Jeannie, you're messing w/ my sex life. Bode Miller is a great lay. Plus he get's a lot of free drinks so you're messing w/ my alcohal problem too. Now is that fair? Sorry Bode baby, these losers don't know you the way I know you...
